The family of the late Kim Sae Ron has spoken out, accusing Kim Soo Hyun’s side of engaging in persistent media manipulation. On December 1, Attorney Bu Ji Seok from the law firm Buyou, representing Kim Sae Ron’s family, issued a statement urging Kim Soo Hyun’s legal team to cease spreading baseless narratives and instead await the official investigation results.
“We sincerely ask that Attorney Go Sang Rok refrain from framing us for evidence tampering for the sake of his personal career and wait for the conclusions from the authorities,” the lawyer stated.

The family emphasized that they had fully cooperated with the investigation, submitting all of Kim Sae Ron’s electronic devices and adhering to law enforcement’s request to avoid media contact. “Because we respected this process, we initially chose not to respond to the one-sided media tactics from Attorney Go Sang Rok of the law firm Pil, representing Kim Soo Hyun.”
The controversy reignited when SBS contacted the family on Saturday, November 8, for an interview for its investigative program. This request reportedly came after Kim Soo Hyun’s side had already completed their interview and the broadcast was nearly finalized. The family’s interview occurred on Monday, November 10, just four days before the scheduled airing. They provided partial evidence that Kim Sae Ron had dated Kim Soo Hyun as a minor and requested balanced coverage.

Following their interview, the SBS producer reportedly told the family that Kim Soo Hyun’s lawyer would be given a right to reply and confirmed that the evidence the family submitted had been shared with him. Yet, on November 12 only two days before the program’s scheduled broadcast the family was abruptly informed that the segment had been canceled.
They further claimed that upon reviewing the submitted material, Attorney Go suddenly shifted his stance and asked SBS not to air it. According to the family, he issued indirect threats that publicizing the evidence could result in legal consequences, including criminal charges, further suggesting an effort to suppress the material through intimidation.

The family believes these tactics led Kim Sae Ron’s mother to issue her first public statement on November 26. “The persistent media play by Kim Soo Hyun’s side forced our hand,” they said.
One particular point of contention involves a memo dated September 28, 2019. The family claims Kim Soo Hyun’s side, after seeing the memo via SBS on November 11, falsely asserted that the word “military” was not mentioned. When the family later revealed a memo dated September 28, 2017 including the word “military” Kim Soo Hyun’s side allegedly shifted narratives again, suggesting the existence of two conflicting versions and accusing the family of forgery.

To support their claims, the family released excerpts of their conversation with the SBS producer. The PD reportedly said, “While I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a conspiracy theory, Kim Soo Hyun’s legal team truly believes there was tampering. They also seem extremely nervous constantly talking about how their entire career is riding on this.”
The family emphasized that despite Kim Soo Hyun’s team having seen the forensic copy of Kim Sae Ron’s original 2017 memo including the word “military” they still accused the family of fabrication due to their own oversight.
