“The Cat Returns” director criticizes ‘sexual harassment’ victim DJ Soda, “She’s acting like a gold digger”
Japanese animation “The Cat Returns” director Hiroyuki Morita criticized DJ Soda in her recent sexual harassment incident.
On August 19th, director Hiroyuki Morita made a post on his SNS account criticizing DJ Soda. He said, “DJ Soda’s claims of sexual harassment damage make me think she’s openly acting like a gold digger, someone who seduces men then extracts money from the person who gets scared”, adding “The music festival organizer should not get involved in her tricks”.
Translator Kim Hye Shin (@sibau***) translated Hiroyuki Morita’s post into Korean and shared it widely on Twitter. The translator said, “The term ‘gold digger’ here should be accurately translated as ‘tsutsumotase’ (which means ‘badger game’). It refers to the method in which a woman seduces a naive young man then extorts money from him by threatening that a gangster, who joins the woman in the scheme, is her husband. It’s a horrible insult to a sexual harassment victim in either way”.
This post gained over 10,000 retweets, triggering netizens’ outrage. In response to Hiroyuki Morita’s remark, Korean and Japanese netizens showed explosive reactions, such as “Does he even know what he’s saying?”, “He’s such a thoughtless guy. This is obviously a secondary harm”, “He ruined my beautiful memory of a great movie”, “Such a terrible comment about the victim”, “I feel so sorry for DJ Soda”, etc.
Earlier, DJ Soda complained that she was sexually harassed by the audience during her performance at a festival in Osaka, Japan on August 13th. The female DJ even released several photos showing people touching her chest during the performance as evidence.
Afterward, TryHard Japan, who hosted the festival DJ Soda performed, issued a statement on the 19th, saying “We would like to confirm once again that this case obviously involved unforgivable sexual harassment and sex crimes. We will identify the perpetrator who committed the crimes and take legal actions, such as filming civil and criminal complaints”.
They emphasized, “Since DJ Soda has to continue her overseas activities, all legal action, including civil and criminal lawsuits, will be entrusted to TryHard Japan, and TryHard Japan has taken on this responsibility”, adding “We are monitoring and tracking down accounts that spread groundless slander, discriminate comments and false information against DJ Soda. We will take strict legal action”.
