Teachers and doctors are not saying anything, why are only the weathercasters not happy with “The Glory”?
Not all elementary school teachers choose the job for revenge. Just as not every doctor is willing to kill for the woman they love.
That’s how people receive the story of “The Glory.” But the weatherman’s position is different. Several former and current weathercasters are drawing attention by criticizing and refuting the words and actions of weathercaster Park Yeon Jin (Lim Ji Yeon) in the Netflix original series “The Glory” (written by Kim Eun Sook and directed by Ahn Gil Ho).
In the drama, Park Yeon Jin is the school violence perpetrator who bullied Moon Dong Eun (Song Hye Kyo) in high school. After graduating, she became a weathercaster who hired a writer to write her manuscript for her, and asked her husband Ha Do Young (played by Jung Sung Il) to change her airing time when she is assigned to the early morning news. Later, she tells the juniors who laugh at her, “This broadcasting station gives me 2.2 million won per month, but my husband spends 220 million won on this broadcasting station.”
On Jan 8th, MBC weathercaster Kim Ga Young posted an article after watching “The Glory” with the title “As a fan who is overly immersed in ‘The Glory’, fact check about weathercaster.” She said, “Is it a moderately fancy job? It’s a job that we need to try hard for,” he said. “Someone to write the script for me? From requesting CG to reporting and writing scripts, it is all the castor’s responsibility. Sometimes, even the music, costumes, and props,” she stressed.
Ahn Hye Kyung, a weathercaster-turned-broadcaster who encountered the mentioned post, commented, “I agree.” After being suspected of criticizing “The Glory,” Kim explained, “I did not intend to criticize anyone. I enjoyed the actor’s acting and the series itself, and this post was written in sympathy with the character’s words. I really didn’t think that there might be people who misunderstood or were uncomfortable by my post.”
SBS weathercaster Yang Tae Bin also posted a review video of “The Glory” on his YouTube channel on Jan 6th, stressing that there is no weathercaster like Park Yeon Jin. He said that Park Yeon Jin’s ability to choose her desired airing time is different from the truth. Yang Tae-bin said, “I haven’t heard or seen anything about that. Do you have to spend a lot of money to change the airing? It’s all circular work and taking turns.”
Park Yeon Jin also mentioned the salary of 2.2 million won a month. Yang Tae Bin said, “We earn more than this,” he said.
However, it seems unlikely that Park Yeon Jin will instill a distorted perception of weathercasters. In addition to Park Yeon Jin, characters from various occupational groups, such as teachers, painters, doctors are also portrayed negatively, but viewers do not accept this as a universal characteristic of the job.
In particular, the weathercasters seem to be overly sensitive to the setting of “The Glory”. Some say that such misunderstanding should be avoided in advance as it might affect the job’s image, while others say that “drama should be viewed as a drama only.”
