Director Kim Han Min, the mastermind behind Korea’s most successful action-historical films including War of the Arrows, The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Hansan: Rising Dragon, and Noryang: Deadly Sea, is set to return with a new epic titled Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan.

The highly anticipated project has officially confirmed an impressive cast lineup featuring Park Bo Gum, Joo Won, Jung Jae Young, Lee Sun Bin, and Kim Hyung Seo (BIBI), raising expectations for another large-scale box office hit.

Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan is set shortly after the fall of Goguryeo in 668 AD. The film follows the story of a man who loses his memory and is enslaved, only to enter a brutal gladiator-style tournament centered around a legendary sword. Set in Yodong Fortress, formerly Goguryeo territory, the film blends historical imagination with large-scale action, portraying the legendary northern blade as a symbol of hope in a chaotic era.

One of the film’s biggest highlights is its focus on Goguryeo-style sword combat, a theme rarely explored in Korean historical cinema. The story unfolds within a massive circular arena where warriors from 16 northern tribes including Khitan, Malgal, and Göktürk forces clash using their own distinct martial arts styles and survival tactics, promising intense, visceral action and cinematic spectacle.

Park Bo Gum takes on the role of Chilseong, an amnesiac warrior forced into slavery. The actor is set to undergo one of the most dramatic transformations of his career, portraying Chilseong’s journey from a desperate gladiator to a legendary hero known as the “Red Wolf.” From raw survival battles to a full-fledged heroic awakening, Park Bo Gum is expected to showcase a powerful new side of his acting range.

Opposite him, Joo Won plays Gyepilharyeok, a cold and formidable warrior representing the Göktürk tribe. Armed with dual swords, the character forms a fierce rivalry with Chilseong. Joo Won’s high-level action sequences are expected to bring sharp tension and intensity to the film.

Veteran actor Jung Jae Young joins the cast as Heuksugang, leader of the Goguryeo restoration army. Acting as both mentor and revolutionary figure, his character secretly works to revive Goguryeo while shaping Chilseong into a true warrior.

Lee Sun Bin, fresh off her rising success in Noise, plays Maya, a mysterious and powerful member of the restoration army, delivering both action and intrigue. Meanwhile, Kim Hyung Seo (BIBI) takes on the role of Injeong, Heuksugang’s daughter, adding emotional depth and new energy to the narrative.

Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan is a passion project Kim Han Min has developed over several years. Notably, the film was selected for Korea’s K-Content AI Pioneer Project after integrating AI technology during its R&D phase. This innovation will be used to enhance large-scale battle choreography and visualize the diverse combat techniques of the 16 tribes, promising a level of spectacle rarely seen in historical films.

Director Kim stated, “If War of the Arrows showcased the speed and spirit of the bow, Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan will capture the sharp yet heavy energy of the sword cutting through a chaotic era.” He added that the film aims to deliver a deeply Korean worldview that blends personal destiny with historical pain, positioning the project as a new K-action hero franchise capable of captivating global audiences.

The film is produced by Bigstone Pictures and Bluefire Studio and is scheduled to begin full-scale production with a target release in the summer of 2027. Redice Entertainment, a subsidiary of Korea’s largest webtoon studio known for Solo Leveling, will serve as the main investor and distributor, alongside co-investor Solare Partners.

With a powerhouse cast, cutting-edge technology, and a legendary director at the helm, Sword: The Blade of Godumakhan is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Korean films of the decade.
