Suzy Talks About “Doona!”, From Acting As An Idol To Filming Behind Stories

Suzy expressed her feelings about playing idol singer Lee Doona in Netflix’s series “Doona!”

On October 29th, Suzy had an interview about her recently released drama “Doona!”. Netflix’s original series “Doona!” depicts the romance of Doona (Suzy), an idol who retires and hides from the public, and college student Won-jun (Yang Se-jong) after meeting each other at a shared house.

During the interview, Suzy honestly revealed various behind-the-scenes stories about the drama. Regarding viewers’ concern that she’s too skinny, Suzy said, “I didn’t starve myself or go on a diet. I ate everything but I also exercised a lot. I only wanted to look skinny at the beginning to give a significant impression”.

When asked about performing on an idol stage after a long time as a member of the girl group Dream Sweet in the drama, Suzy said, “I felt strange in the first practice. I found it amazing that I was working with another group and different members. Go Ah-sung and others did so well that I didn’t have any tips for them”, adding “The KCON stage was a familiar space and I actually had the experience of being on stage, but the director was so worried about me. I had only one chance to film the KCON stage, so I tried to stay focused.”

Suzy had a conflict with her members during Miss A’s activities. Even in “Doona!”, she also has a conflict with Go Ah-sung. Regarding the reconciliation scene in the second half of the drama, Suzy said, “It’s one of my favorite scenes. I felt greatly emotional because I felt that I wanted to resolve all the misunderstandings. It was an important scene”.

Suzy also shared her thoughts on her co-star Yang Se-jong and his character Won-jun, saying “I think Doona learns that Won-jun is harmless in the hospital scene where he claims to be Doona’s guardian”. The actress said she felt a strong emotional connection with Yang Se-jong and they built chemistry by discussing the emotions of their characters. In particular, Suzy confessed, “Yang Se-jong was so much like Won-jun, which made it easier for me to immerse in the story and act”. Regarding their moments of physical contact in the drama, Suzy said, “I asked the director the level of skinship he wanted and he said he wanted such moments to naturally show when the two characters’ emotions explode.”

When asked about the difficulties during the filming process, the actress said, “Doona always wears thin clothes because she doesn’t go out except for when she smokes. It was hard to immerse in the character’s emotions when filming in the cold winter because I kept trembling”, adding “During the Viking scene, my hat flew away so I had to do it again. The shooting of the Viking scene was so tiring”, revealing a behind-the-scenes story.

Suzy also talked about Doona’s image with a hime cut. The director actually wanted a style without bangs but Suzy suggested the hime cut because she wanted to add a strong feeling to Doona’s appearance. Regarding her favorite scene of Doona, Suzy shyly said, “It’s the scene when she waits for the phone call during the ending credit of episode 1”.

“Doona!” wrapped up with an open ending that leaves viewers with their own interpretations. In this regard, Suzy carefully expressed her thoughts, saying “There were times when I thought the two would have a happy ending, but there were times I felt like they would be living in their own reality. After watching the drama, I think the two would be living well in their own world.”

Meanwhile, “Doona!” immediately rose to No.1 on Netflix Korea’s Top 10 TV Shows after its release and entered the global ranking for non-English dramas at No.7.
