According to Netflix’s official TUDUM chart, the fantasy-romance series Genie, Make a Wish recorded 8 million views (based on watch hours divided by runtime) between October 6 and 12, earning the #1 spot on the Global Non-English Series Top 10. The drama also entered the Top 10 list in over 50 countries, including Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and the Dominican Republic, claiming #1 in ten of them. Additionally, Genie, Make a Wish ranked first in Korea’s integrated TV-OTT buzz chart for two consecutive weeks, proving its strong popularity.
The chemistry between Suzy and Kim Woo Bin, reuniting after nine years, has become a major talking point. Both topped Korea’s drama cast buzz rankings — Suzy at #1 and Kim Woo Bin at #2 — receiving praise for their emotional depth and natural on-screen rapport. Viewers particularly applauded Suzy’s transformation, calling her portrayal of Ka Young, an emotionless and complex character, one of her most mature performances to date.
In an interview, Suzy reflected on her role and the impact of the series: “The moments I spent immersed in Ka Young still linger deeply within me,” she said. “Thanks to all the viewers who loved this strange yet beautiful story, I could relive those intense emotions again. I’m truly grateful to everyone who saw beyond the scenes. For those who haven’t watched it yet — I highly recommend stepping into this strange world.”
When asked about her character interpretation, Suzy explained that Ka Young suffers from antisocial personality disorder but isn’t portrayed as a typical psychopath.
“She lives like a robot, bored with life, and has accepted the label of a ‘psychopath’ placed upon her since childhood,” Suzy said. “I wanted to express her as someone who already believes she’s bad and unworthy before even understanding herself.”
Suzy also revealed that she portrayed Ka Young’s past and present selves with different tones and expressions: “In her past life, she was selfless — the opposite of who she is now. Switching between those two versions made me realize how happiness lies in expressing oneself.”
Discussing the symbolic line where Ka Young wishes to “feel human emotions,” Suzy noted: “It reflects her desperate desire to understand feelings she’s only observed in others. After losing her grandmother, her emotional safety net disappears, and she starts craving the humanity she’s never known. That’s her true growth.”
Regarding styling, Suzy said she intentionally highlighted Ka Young’s detachment through bold fashion: “Current Ka Young doesn’t care about others’ opinions and has the wealth to do whatever she wants. She wears flashy colors freely, while her past self was toned down and innocent.”
Her most memorable scene, she said, was one featuring her grandmother, played by Kim Mi Kyung: “When the grandmother secretly wipes away tears while teaching young Ka Young about emotions — that scene broke my heart. It shows unconditional love at its purest.”
Suzy also shared her thoughts on working with writer Kim Eun Sook for the first time: “It was a meaningful experience. Even though we didn’t talk much, her feedback and encouragement gave me strength.”
On reuniting with Kim Woo Bin, she said: “His emotional depth in the later episodes really impressed me. Every moment felt new and surprising. Next time, I’d love to work with him again in a completely different genre — maybe an office drama!”
When asked about filming with Song Hye Kyo, who made a surprise cameo as “Genie’s ex-girlfriend,” Suzy shared:
“I was so nervous since we weren’t close then. I had to act like I was competing with her, which was intimidating but such an honor. We became friends afterward. Now, whenever it rains, I joke, ‘Is unnie upset?’ and she finds it funny.”
Suzy also revealed that she practiced her Arabic lines tirelessly: “It was tough. I listened to recordings nonstop and memorized everything, but would forget it right after! Thankfully, my scenes weren’t too long.”
When asked to define the romance between her and Kim Woo Bin’s characters, she answered with one word — “Habibti (My love).”
Reflecting on the feedback and reviews, Suzy shared: “The comments that resonated with me the most were from people who said the show made them realize humanity is about choices — not birth or circumstance. That’s exactly the message we wanted to convey.”
