On September 4, the YouTube channel “Jae Friends” released a video titled “A Fan’s Dream Comes True Amid Screams.” Appearing as a guest, Sunmi confessed she had been a longtime fan of Kim Jaejoong since his TVXQ days, admitting she was so nervous that she could barely look him in the eye. “I didn’t know when I would ever get to see him,” she said, adding with awe, “You debuted when I was in fourth grade, but you still look the same as back then.”
Sunmi went on to reveal, “I dreamed of becoming a singer after watching TVXQ and BoA. I even auditioned for SM.” Kim Jaejoong responded, “That’s right—I remember. I was from the 2nd round, and you were from the 9th round of the SM ‘Annual Audition.’ We’re both from that competition.”

When asked why she ultimately joined JYP instead, Sunmi explained, “I passed the audition at SM and even won second place in the Best Visuals category. I thought I’d debut there, but they never contacted me. Around that time, one of the SM casting directors moved to JYP and offered me an audition there. That’s how it happened.”
Kim Jaejoong empathized, saying, “Before signing a contract, it’s always your choice that matters. If you hadn’t debuted in Wonder Girls, you could have ended up in Girls’ Generation.”
Sunmi also recalled the kindness of the casting directors: “After they found out I was a fan of TVXQ, they actually sent me an autographed CD all the way to Gyeongju. I was so grateful for that.”
