On April 6, U.S. media outlet WIRED released an interview video with BTS on YouTube. During the segment, Suga was asked about the origin of his stage name and responded, “I can finally explain it properly now,” before revealing, “It comes from the name of the legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, just without the ‘R.’”

He added that the name was not something he personally created. “Producer Bang Si-hyuk, who enjoys boxing, gave me the name. It also matches my technical rap style,” Suga explained.

Following his revelation, Sugar Ray Leonard himself responded. On April 8, the boxing icon shared a screenshot of the news on his Instagram and wrote, “I’m grateful to know that ‘Sugar’ could inspire someone across the world in a completely different craft.”

He continued, “At the end of the day, it’s not just a name it’s about the work, the dedication, and the love for what you do,” adding, “Respect to Suga for carrying that forward.”

Sugar Ray Leonard is widely regarded as one of the greatest out-boxers in history. With a professional record of 40 fights, including 36 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw, he remains a legendary figure in the world of boxing.
