The JTBC drama Still Shining is facing growing controversy after airing scenes involving drunk driving, all while struggling with extremely low viewership ratings in the 0% range.
In episodes 7 and 8, which aired on March 27, multiple scenes depicting alcohol consumption followed by driving were broadcast, sparking public concern.
In episode 7, the character Yeon Tae Seo (played by Park Jinyoung) is shown drinking with his grandfather and later again in a setting with Park So Hyun (Kim Ji Hyun). Despite clear indications of alcohol consumption such as soju bottles and cups he is portrayed driving afterward.
Episode 8 escalates the issue further. Bae Seong Chan (Shin Jae Ha) is shown consuming a large amount of alcohol late at night. Even after acknowledging his drinking by saying he would leave quietly at dawn once he sobers up, he is later depicted getting behind the wheel early in the morning, suggesting hangover driving.

The scenes quickly drew criticism. A viewer filed a formal complaint through Korea’s national petition system, arguing that the repeated portrayal of drunk or hangover driving without clearly framing it as dangerous or wrong was problematic. The complaint pointed out that such scenes were used merely as tools for dramatic tension rather than being treated with appropriate caution.
The complainant further urged authorities to conduct a thorough review and take appropriate action based on broadcasting regulations and standards.
The Korea Communications Standards Commission is expected to review the case and decide whether to proceed with formal deliberation.
Still Shining, which stars Park Jinyoung and Kim Min Ju, tells the story of young individuals who grow together, becoming each other’s guiding light in life. The drama premiered on March 6 and airs two consecutive episodes every Friday evening.

Despite its promising premise, the show has struggled in ratings. It started with 2.1% for its first episode but quickly dropped to 1.2% by episodes 3 and 4. Since then, it has continued to decline, now hovering in the 0% range.
Instead of reversing its downward trend, the drama is now facing criticism for what many consider a poor creative decision introducing controversial drunk driving scenes at a time when it is already losing viewer support.
As of now, the problematic scenes have not been edited or removed. Viewers are closely watching how the production team will respond and whether any corrective measures will be taken.
