“Squid Game” Star Banned From Appearing On KBS Due To Sexual Harassment Allegations

Actor Oh Young-soo has been put on KBS’s appearance suspension while appealing against the court’s ruling for his sex crime

On May 28th, Star News reported that KBS has decided to temporarily ban Oh Young-soo from appearing on their programs. KBS reportedly held a broadcast appearance regulation review committee meeting on May 13th.

While staying in Daegu for the performances of the play “King Lear” in August 2017, Oh Young-soo hugged victim A while taking a walk together. He was also accused of force harassment by kissing A on the cheek in front of A’s residence in September.

Oh Young-soo’s forced harassment allegation was revealed to the public in November 2022. A demanded an apology from Oh Young-soo after he became popular with Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game”, but the actor denied the crime, so A decided to file a complaint.

Later, Oh Young-soo admitted that he took a walk with A and visited A’s residence but denied the forced harassment allegation.

In February, the prosecution stated, “In 2017, the defendant made the victim feel frustrated by his expression of inappropriate desire, such as ‘I think of you as a woman’. Later in his apology text to the victim, he kept avoiding responsibility by saying ‘You’re like my daughter’”. Therefore, they asked the court to publicize the actor’s personal information and order restrictions on his employment for one year.

At the sentencing hearing held on March 15th, the court sentenced Oh Young-soo to 8 years in suspended jail, and 2 years of probation then ordered him to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program.

Explaining the reason for the sentence, the court said Oh Young-soo admitted to the charges and took into account that it was his first offense. Both Oh Young-soo and the prosecution have filed an appeal against the ruling.

Later, KBS held a screening committee on TV appearances and decided to refrain Oh Young-soo from appearing on their programs. However, the regulations might have been strengthened as Oh Young-soo’s sentence has been confirmed

Born in 1944, Oh Young-soo is 79 years old. He has been active as a theater actor and voice actor since the 1960s. In 2021, he made his face known to the public with the role of Oh Il-nam in Netflix’s “Squid Game” and became the first Korean to win Best Supporting Actor in TV at the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
