Actor Song Joong-ki, who turns 40 this year, has opened up about his journey as an actor and the struggles that shaped him since his teenage years.
In a recent interview and pictorial with Elle Korea alongside co-star Chun Woo-hee for the upcoming drama My Youth, Song Joong-ki reflected on his younger self and his career choices.
When asked about his character Sun Woo-ha’s connection with Chun Woo-hee’s role, which begins at age 19, Song Joong-ki recalled his own life at that age: “At 19, I was focused on preparing for the college entrance exam. I was just a normal high school senior, wondering what kind of adult I would become and setting standards for myself,” he shared.
Song Joong-ki later entered Sungkyunkwan University’s Business Administration department after a year of retaking the exam, and made his acting debut in 2008 with a minor role in Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung.
Discussing My Youth, Song Joong-ki revealed the script resonated with him deeply: “When I read the script, I felt healed. It made me look back on my career. In my past projects, I’ve been a werewolf, a special forces soldier, someone drifting in space, even a lawyer who’s also part of the mafia. But rarely have I played someone who’s grounded in the real world. I wanted to portray a character with a truly human scent, so I actually requested this role first.”
Now approaching his 20th year in acting, Song Joong-ki reflected on turning 40: “As an actor, I’ve always said I don’t want to remain stagnant. Even now, I’m constantly struggling and challenging myself. I’m grateful I still have the chance to take on new challenges, and I’ll continue to push forward.”
With My Youth set to premiere soon, anticipation is high for Song Joong-ki’s return to a heartfelt, down-to-earth role that may showcase a new side of the veteran actor.
