In a candid interview held in Seoul on October 23 ahead of the release of her new film Savior, Song Ji Hyo discussed her character and her minimalist approach to beauty. The mystery occult thriller, directed by Shin Joon, premieres on November 5 and follows the story of Yeongbeom and Seonhee, a couple who experience strange miracles after moving to a seemingly blessed village only to uncover the grim truth that these miracles come at someone else’s expense.

Song Ji Hyo portrays Seonhee, a woman losing her sight after a tragic accident, enduring suffering through her faith. While filming, Song wore thick magnifying glasses to portray a visually impaired character more realistically. “I have great vision 1.5 in both eyes but with those glasses, I could barely see. At one point, I worried the film would ruin my eyesight,” she joked.

Her role required minimal makeup something she embraced fully. “I’ve never been into glamming up. Not wearing makeup is part of my aesthetic,” she stated. “I feel bad for the people who style me, but sitting still in a salon for an hour and a half is painful. I try to reduce that time as much as possible.”

When asked if it’s due to a lack of motivation, she firmly responded: “Not at all. I just prefer using that time to boost my stamina. Feeling emotionally uplifted is more important than looking pretty. I value my inner state over appearance.”

Reflecting on her peak beauty era, Song pointed to her early Running Man days: “I started when I was 30 and thought I had life figured out. I knew how to work the camera.” Ironically, she credits the popular variety show for helping her move away from elaborate styling.

“Back then, water games were a regular part of filming. You’d get all dolled up, then be drenched minutes later. It made me think why waste my energy?”

Her relaxed style has drawn criticism. Some fans even issued formal statements urging her to change stylists. “I got scolded a lot for not going to the salon. I didn’t realize fans cared that much,” she admitted. “I took their feelings too lightly. I saw it as my show, forgetting it’s also a visual profession. Running Man gave me great memories but it also made me reflect.”

Savior opens in theaters on November 5, marking another bold chapter in Song Ji Hyo’s acting journey one rooted in authenticity, not aesthetics.
