Shinsadong Tiger Explains Controversy Over Heize’s Remake Of BEAST’s Hit Song “Midnight”

On November 29th, controversy over Track 6 “Midnight” of Heize’s 8th mini album “Last Winter” tracklist arose. Fans are expressing disappointment because the notation of the track being a remake of BEAST’s hit song “Midnight” released in 2012 has been omitted.

In this regard, Shinsadong Tiger, who wrote and composed BEAST’s “Midnight”, gave an explanation in a telephone interview with Xports News. He said, “The original composers of the song, including me, Choi Gyu-sung and Yong Jun-hyung, received details about this remake project from P Nation’s A&R team and everyone agreed. Everything, from the notation of the song on the tracklist to details of the upcoming process, has been agreed through comprehensive communication”, confirming that there was no problem with the remake song.

In particular, Heize has been working on this remake with great affection for a long time and she even released a cover video six months ago. The cover video clearly noted the song as “BEAST ‘Midnight’ (COVER)”.

Shinsadong Tiger continued, “The notation is not necessary when announcing the remake version. The song has already been specified as ‘original song by BEAST’, and the process of including the remake version in the new album has been discussed and agreed upon with the original producers”, adding “However, from the perspective of fans, they may feel a sense of regretful and develop misunderstandings due to the lack of information about the backstory of the original song by BEAST. I’m very sorry that there was a lack of consideration and respect for the fandom apart from the original producers and singers.”

In addition, the producer praised the professionalism of Heize and her agency P Nation during the process of discussing the remake project. He also expressed his satisfaction and pleasure to have a charming vocalist like Heize sing the remake version of “Midnight”. He emphasized, “If this remake were to be used to make profits and ignore the narratives and efforts of the original producers and singers, I would feel very upset and angry. However, we carried out enough consultation and communication for this remake project. I hope everyone understands this.”

Meanwhile, Shinsadong Tiger is a popular hitmaker in the Korean music industry. He has produced countless hit songs, such as T-ara’s “Roly Poly”, Apink’s “Nonono” & “Remember”, EXID’s “Up and Down” & “DDD”, MOMOLAND’s “Bboom Bboom”, etc. He is currently the producer of the girl group TR.BE.
