According to an exclusive report from Seoul Shinmun, a non-commissioned officer at the Korea Army Training Center requested that SEVENTEEN’s Woozi, whose real name is Lee Ji-hoon, help introduce a singer to perform at the officer’s wedding. The request reportedly took place in September, shortly after Woozi enlisted as a basic training recruit.
The two were not known to have any prior personal relationship before Woozi’s enlistment. Despite this, Woozi reportedly contacted a well-known ballad singer with whom he had a personal connection. The singer later performed at the wedding in October, allegedly without receiving any performance fee.

The Army acknowledged the incident but emphasized that the request was not coercive. Officials stated that Woozi complied voluntarily as a personal favor and that no laws or military regulations were violated. At the time of the request, Woozi had not yet been assigned to his current unit. He was later selected as an assistant instructor and ended up serving in the same training battalion as the officer.
However, the situation has sparked debate over the appropriateness of such a request within a rigid military hierarchy. Legal experts pointed out that, even without explicit pressure, it can be difficult for enlisted soldiers especially new recruits to refuse personal requests from superiors.
Attorney Noh Jong-eon noted that South Korean courts have previously ruled that the closed and hierarchical nature of military organizations makes it hard for subordinates to freely decline private favors, raising questions about potential violations of military conduct rules such as the duty of integrity and maintaining dignity.

While no disciplinary action has been announced, public reaction remains divided. Some argue that Woozi was placed in an uncomfortable position due to his celebrity status, while others believe the issue reflects broader concerns about power dynamics within the military rather than any wrongdoing by the artist himself.
As the discussion continues, Woozi has not made a public statement regarding the matter. Fans have largely expressed support, emphasizing that the idol was fulfilling his mandatory service and should not be blamed for a situation created by a superior’s request.
