Renowned Japanese actress Ryoko Yonekura has been formally referred to prosecutors amid allegations of illegal drug use, sending shockwaves through the Japanese entertainment industry. According to major Japanese media outlets on January 20, investigative authorities have submitted case documents related to Yonekura on suspicion of violating Japan’s drug control laws.

The investigation began in June last year after the Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare’s Narcotics Control Department received a tip alleging that Yonekura had used illegal substances together with a man of Argentine nationality, identified only as A. Following a period of internal inquiry, authorities conducted a search of Yonekura’s residence in Tokyo, where they reportedly seized substances suspected to be illegal drugs.

The Argentine national involved in the case has since left Japan. Investigators are continuing to determine the true ownership of the seized substances, focusing on evidence obtained during the home search. The case file has now been forwarded to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, which is expected to carefully review the materials before deciding on any potential charges or further action.

In December of last year, Yonekura addressed the issue through an official statement, acknowledging that investigative authorities had indeed carried out a search of her home, as reported by the media. She stated that she would continue to cooperate fully with the investigation and expressed her understanding that, based on her cooperation up to that point, the matter was moving toward a conclusion.

Born in 1975, Ryoko Yonekura is now 50 years old and is widely regarded as one of Japan’s top actresses. She is best known for her roles in hit dramas such as Love Revolution (2001), Artificial Beauty (2002), Kurokawa no Techo (2004), Kemonomichi (2006), and Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon (2012-2021). As the prosecutors deliberate on the case, public attention remains firmly fixed on how this high-profile investigation will unfold and what it may mean for Yonekura’s career.
