Netflix’s latest romantic series Romantic Anonymous, starring South Korean actress Han Hyo-joo and Japanese actor Oguri Shun, has rapidly become a buzzworthy hit in Korea.

As of October 18 at 5 PM, the series entered Netflix Korea’s Top 10, ranking 4th just two days after its release, signaling strong early success.

The 8-episode series follows Sosuke (Oguri Shun), the heir of a confectionery company who struggles with germophobia, and Hana (Han Hyo-joo), a genius chocolatier who fears social attention. Their awkward yet endearing romance unfolds as they gradually open their hearts to one another through chocolate. The storyline balances warmth and humor, striking a chord with viewers.

Although primarily a Japanese Netflix original, Romantic Anonymous is produced by Korean production company Yong Film. It is directed by Tsukikawa Sho, known for the visually captivating film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, with the script penned by Korean writer Kim Ji-hyun.

The cross-cultural collaboration is further highlighted by a mostly Japanese cast, with Han Hyo-joo as the lead exception. The final episode features a special appearance by Song Joong-ki alongside Sakaguchi Kentaro.

The soundtrack also draws attention, including a Japanese cover of Park Hye-kyung’s “Confession” reinterpreted by music director Dalpahan, and LE SSERAFIM’s Kim Chaewon contributing the theme song.

Domestic viewers have responded positively, praising the series as “healing romantic comedy” and noting its familiar yet comforting Korean drama vibe. The series’ success in Korea reflects the growing appeal of cross-cultural K-Japanese collaborations and Han Hyo-joo’s enduring star power.

Romantic Anonymous is available for streaming now on Netflix.
