3rd generation Kpop girl groups are thriving in international music markets

Third-generation Kpop girl groups are breaking into the international market, affirming their global popularity.

Currently, fourth-generation girl group are making waves in the industry, with notable names being aespa, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, StayC, NewJeans, Fifty Fifty, H1-Key, Kep1er, NMIXX, and Queenz Eye, among others.

However, long-standing third-generation girl groups show no sign of diminishing popularity. In fact, TWICE, BLACKPINK, Red Velvet, Mamamoo, OH MY GIRL, WJSN, and Dreamcatcher, have been receiving special global attention.

After announcing that all members renewed their contracts, TWICE started their 5th world tour “READY TO BE” with a performance in Seoul on April 15th and 16th. Starting in May, the group will hit cities across Australia, Japan, and North America one after another. TWICE has also released the second batch of concert performances in Europe and some Southeast Asian countries.

Moreover, tickets to TWICE’s concert at huge venues, such as MetLife Stadium and SoFi Stadium, were sold out at a high speed, making the JYP girl group to be the first female Kpop act to achieve such feats.

On the other hand, BLACKPINK recently made history as the first Kpop artist to headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. With 26 concert performances over 18 cities (and ongoing), BLACKPINK’s world tour has also broken records and became the highest-grossing tour in history for a female group.

According to media outlet The Star, BLACKPINK sold about 366,000 tickets throughout the 2022 part of their tour, earning about 78.5 million US dollars, surpassing the previous record holder Spice Girls, who earned 78.2 million US dollars with their 2019 world tour. As there are more performances ahead, BLACKPINK is expected to reach more milestones in the future.

On May 16th (local time), the pre-purchase seats for Mamamoo’s concert were sold out as soon as the ticket sales was opened, with performances being held across 9 U.S. cities. Moreover, Mamamoo also proves their popularity in Asia. Following Seoul in November last year, Mamamoo held a total of 15 performances in 9 Asian cities, and filled every seat at their venues.

Meanwhile, Red Velvet held their fourth solo concert “R to V” on April 1st and 2nd and met fans. This is Red Velvet’s first concert where they could meet fans directly after 4 years. The last concert in Seoul was also broadcast live online on the global platform Beyond LIVE, attracting audiences from around 90 countries around the world.

On the other hand, Dreamcatcher is known as a performance-oriented girl group overseas. They recently wrapped up their U.S. tour in March and carried out performances across 9 cities.

Oh My Girl

Following Jiho’s departure from OH MY GIRL, members of the group are focusing more on individual activities.

During the contract renewal period, two members of WJSN, Luda and Dawon, decided not to renew the contract. This leaves WJSN to continue their activities as an eight-member group.

While most girl groups remain active, with some changes in formation, others disbanded or are on the verge of disbandment. GFRIEND, Lovelyz, and Momoland disbanded while LOONA is in a lengthy dispute with their agency, Blockberry Creative.
