Reborn Dramas Continue To Dominate The Small Screen: “Death’s Game”, “Marry My Husband” And More
There is a trend of dramas in which the protagonists die bitterly then live their second life after reincarnations
According to people in the broadcasting industry on December 31st, the craze of reincarnation series, which started with the hit drama “Reborn Rich” more than a year ago, recently returned to the small screen.
TVING’s original series “Death’s Game” is gaining huge popularity as it depicts the main character experiencing various lives continuously. In particular, it shows Choi Yi-jae (Seo In-guk) receiving punishment from Death (Park So-dam) as he decides to make an extreme choice. Death punishes Choi Yi-jae by making him enter the bodies of 12 people who are about to die soon and experience 12 deaths. After those experiences, Choi Yi-jae begins to gain back his desire to live and even tries to prevent upcoming deaths.
The drama received favorable reviews from viewers, such as “This drama really makes me think more deeply about life and death”, “I’ve gained more courage to live”, “Every episode has a different story with fast developments to increase viewers’ immersion”, etc. The drama is also arousing keen interest from global viewers through its broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.
MBN’s drama “Perfect Marriage Revenge”, which ended on December 3rd, is also a reincarnation series based on a web novel. Han Yi-joo (Jung Yoo-min) finds out that her husband married her but he actually loves her younger sister so she seeks revenge. After dying bitterly, Yi-joo was born again before her marriage and decides to marry Seo Do-guk (Sung Hoon), the man whom her sister loves, in order to take revenge on her husband and the family.
On January 1st of 2024, the new tvN series “Marry My Husband” will premiere. This drama is also about the reincarnation of a woman who witnesses a love affair between her husband and her best friend. The female lead Kang Ji-young (Park Min-young) returns to 10 years before in the past and tries to change her fate in her second life.
Reincarnation first became a mainstream genre in webtoons and web novels and as these works were adapted into dramas, the scope of this genre also expanded.
Pop culture critic Jung Deok-hyun said, “Fantasy stories about resetting lives after reincarnations is an attractive subject that allows creators to make various stories in multiple lives”, adding “Moving from webtoons and web novels to dramas, reincarnation is establishing itself as a popular genre”.
