The June 1 update of the official Toriyama Archives reportedly revisited a colorful illustration created by the late manga artist more than four decades ago.
A Rare Look at Toriyama’s Creative Process
The artwork shows a mischievous young Goku leaping through the air behind Bulma, who smiles confidently while holding a loaded gun. Its bright colors, playful energy, and unmistakable 1980s aesthetic immediately bring back the adventurous spirit of early Dragon Ball.
The illustration originally appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump No. 3 in 1985 and was later used as the cover artwork for Volume 10 of the original manga. The archive also highlighted an early draft of the image, allowing fans to examine how Toriyama developed its energetic composition and striking color palette.
Rather than focusing only on combat, the illustration captures the humor, imagination, and sense of exploration that defined the series before its later transformation into a large-scale martial arts epic. The image also serves as a reminder that Goku and Bulma were the franchise’s original central pair.
Bulma Was Never Just Comic Relief
Bulma appeared in the opening chapter of Dragon Ball, beginning the journey that eventually brought Goku into contact with countless allies and enemies. Although her dramatic personality and early comedic scenes often attracted attention, Bulma has always played a much larger role in the story.

More than four decades after its original publication, Toriyama’s illustration still feels lively and imaginative—a lasting example of the visual charm that turned Dragon Ball into a global phenomenon. Akira Toriyama, who created and illustrated the original manga, remains widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in modern manga history.
