“Why is he even apologizing?” —This question is now echoing across Japanese social media after Ran Takahashi (高橋藍), a star of Japan’s national men’s volleyball team, publicly apologized following a tabloid exposé alleging a love triangle involving him, a top-rated adult video actress, and a popular influencer.

Takahashi, 24, who also serves as the captain of last season’s SV League champions Suntory Sunbirds, posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on October 23. In response to the report by Shukan Bunshun, he wrote, “I sincerely apologize for the uproar caused by coverage of my private life. I will now focus on the 2025-26 SV.LEAGUE season starting tomorrow.”
The article claimed Takahashi was romantically involved with two women: Ayaka Kawakita (河北彩伽), a well-known AV star, and uka. (@d28 uka), a glamorous influencer with over 150,000 Instagram followers who was reportedly his “main girlfriend.”

However, both women have since denied the relationships.
In a fan chat on the evening of October 22, Kawakita denied dating Takahashi, stating “Most of the article is not true.” The next day, she allegedly expressed shock, saying she didn’t even know about the other woman.
Similarly, NEWS Post Seven reported that close acquaintances of the influencer uka. also claimed she and Takahashi were just “good friends” and were confused by the sudden media frenzy.
Despite these denials, the public reaction to Takahashi’s apology was swift and divided. Former boxing champion and YouTuber Valentine Hosokawa publicly questioned the necessity of the statement. “Why the hell is he apologizing?” he posted, adding that society needs to rethink its expectations around athletes’ private lives.

The debate now rages on—was the apology a mature response to protect his career, or an unnecessary bow to public pressure in an era of tabloid-driven outrage?
As the new volleyball season kicks off, all eyes are on Takahashi—not just for his performance on the court, but how he handles the off-court storm swirling around him.
