On August 29, Apple TV+ released KPOPPED, a global music competition program pairing world-renowned pop icons with top K-Pop groups. KPOPPED features artists reinterpreting their signature songs in K-Pop style, blending genres and cultures for groundbreaking performances. However, the show has been overshadowed by controversy involving Psy, who was recently booked by police for allegedly having his manager illegally collect prescription psychotropic drugs on his behalf.

KPOPPED, an eight-episode program, was executive produced by CJ Vice Chairwoman Miky Lee alongside Shin Hyung-kwan, Hong Joon-ki, Lionel Richie, Bruce Eskowitz, Megan Thee Stallion, Greg Foster, and Moira Ross. The program underscores the elevated global standing of K-Pop, as iconic international stars traveled to Korea to collaborate with K-Pop artists rather than the other way around.

Director Lee Yeon-kyu explained in a press interview that casting international talent was surprisingly smooth, with many artists already showing strong interest in K-Pop. He cited J Balvin’s prior meeting with ATEEZ at Coachella as an example of collaborations that naturally came together. According to Lee, the show intentionally brought together both legendary and iconic artists from diverse genres and countries.

The anticipation grew when the production team unveiled performance still cuts featuring Psy, Megan Thee Stallion, ATEEZ, Boyz II Men, and Billlie during the KPOPPED showcase held in Seoul on August 26. Lee revealed that Psy and Megan were chosen as central figures for their teams due to their influence—Psy as a representative K-Pop star and Megan as a global pop powerhouse. He praised Megan’s boundless energy and Psy’s strong communication skills, noting their on-stage chemistry as one of the program’s highlights.

Still, Psy’s ongoing legal investigation has left the production in a difficult position. With his appearances being substantial, speculation about whether his scenes would be edited has mounted. Both Lee and program officials declined to confirm any changes, emphasizing that they could not comment on personal issues of cast members.

Despite the controversy, Lee stressed that the essence of KPOPPED remains the music itself. He highlighted that while visuals and performance play a role, it is the beauty of K-Pop’s lyrics and melodies that resonate most deeply with global audiences.
