In an unexpected turn of events, Poco, a game developed by a group of university students as part of their graduation project, has become a breakout indie success on Steam.
A Student Project Turned Indie Phenomenon
Boasting over 600 user reviews and an impressive 92% positive rating, Poco is now officially listed under the “Overwhelmingly Positive” category on the platform—a rare feat for any game, let alone a non-commercial, free-to-play student project.

Initially conceived purely as a graduation assignment, Poco has far surpassed its original scope, thanks to dedicated attention to art direction, sound design, and storytelling. The game was developed with minimal funding, raising approximately $2,600 from 88 backers on Kickstarter, used primarily for post-production and festival entry fees. The developers had no plans for commercial release, instead offering the game for free on Steam.
A Surreal Adventure with Heart
Poco invites players into the whimsical journey of the “smallest clown in the world,” who is exiled from the circus and cast into a surreal realm called Below World. Players help the character build a rocket to escape, engaging with quirky NPCs, solving puzzles, and navigating numerous mini-games through a narrative rich in metaphor and eccentric humor.

The game combines classic point-and-click adventure mechanics with surreal animated storytelling. Visually, it blends animated 3D models with hand-drawn 2D backgrounds, striking a nostalgic yet modern aesthetic—a style increasingly favored within the indie game community.
The Power of Word of Mouth
Streamers played a significant role in Poco’s rapid rise. In late May 2025 alone, several popular streamers with a combined following of over 300,000 showcased the game, resulting in more than 2,000 hours of streamed content, according to Streams Charts.

In an industry dominated by big-budget AAA titles, Poco’s success stands as a testament to the power of creativity, artistic sincerity, and grassroots community support. More than just a game, Poco offers inspiration for aspiring game developers around the world. The game is now available for free download on Steam.
