Singer and actor Park Yoochun has drawn criticism after posting photos of his appearance on Japanese television on August 15, Korea’s Liberation Day.

On his personal SNS, Park Yoochun uploaded several images taken at the Tokyo MX music program “Room 70 Residents.” In the photos, he posed with a cheerful smile, flashing a double peace sign outside the waiting room, and later appeared alongside the show’s host, Toyama Daisuke.

While some fans welcomed his update, others found the timing insensitive. August 15 is a deeply symbolic day in Korea, marking its liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

One netizen commented: “Did he really have to post this on Liberation Day of all days?” Another added: “It seems like he’s completely focused on Japan now.”

Park Yoochun’s career has long been marked by controversy. In 2019, he was convicted for drug use and sentenced to probation, after which he announced his retirement from the entertainment industry. However, he resumed activities just a year later, sparking public criticism.

In 2024, his name appeared on the National Tax Service’s list of habitual tax delinquents, revealing that he owed approximately 490 million KRW (about $370,000 USD) in unpaid taxes.

Despite his troubled image in Korea, Park Yoochun continues to maintain an active career in Japan, holding fan meetings and releasing music. His new EP “Metro Love” is set to drop on August 20, with promotions already underway in Japan.

Still, his decision to share photos of his Japanese TV appearance on Liberation Day has reignited debate about his commitment to Korean fans and his awareness of cultural sensitivities.
