Park Seo-joon, Park Bo-gum and Ji Chang-wook gather in one place… You can’t help but smile

Park Seo-joon, Park Bo-gum and Ji Chang-wook gathered for an entertainment program named “Young Actors’ Retreat”.

But it is not just them. The Itaewon Class team included Park Seo-joon, Ahn Bo-hyun, Kwon Na-ra, Ryu Kyung-soo, Lee Joo-young; the Love in the Moonlight team included Park Bo-gum, Kim Yoo-jung, Jin-young, Chae Soo-bin, Kwak Dong-yeon; and the The Sound of Magic team included Ji Chang-wook, Choi Sung-eun, Hwang In-youp, Ji Hye-won, Kim Bo-yoon.

In a way, it is director Kim Seong-yoon who brought together those who seem to have no connection at all. Director Kim Seong-yoon directed all three works. He said he did not know that so many actors would participate in the program. Eventually, TVING’s original program “Young Actors’ Retreat” became a hot topic just by casting.

Of course, if you are a fan of the above-mentioned works, “Young Actors’ Retreat” is a program which helps you see the casts again. Director Kim Seong-yoon, who is well aware of this, chose the dramas’ filming locations as the places where the actors met in teams. Team leaders Park Seo-joon, Kim Yoo-jung and Ji Chang-wook played a game in which they bet their pocket money provided for lunch to find team members waiting at a specific location among various filming locations. It was more like a kind of remind opening than a game. It was like walking back into the scenery in that drama at that time.

Each team gathered in this way and moved to the MT location in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do. The moment they gathered in one place created a strange atmosphere mixed with awkwardness and excitement. The actors, who were shy of strangers, looked awkward with other teams. However, through a game in which three teams were mixed to form new teams and played over dinner, they gradually got to know each other and adapted to the situation.

In terms of composition alone, “Young Actors’ Retreat” is not much different from Na Young-seok’s luck-based entertainment shows like “1 Night 2 Days”. This is because it is to look into the chemistry that takes place while playing luck-based games in a specific place. However, it is casting that transcends the familiarity of the composition. This is because the people who play luck-based games are actors who seem to have popped out of the drama.

Beyond just bringing together the actors of the three dramas, the keyword “youth” is enough to captivate viewers in that it clarifies the program’s color. “Itaewon Class”, “Love in the Moonlight” and “The Sound of Magic” are all works with narratives of youth, and the actors have a youthful and energetic image that can be called “icons of youth”.

“Young Actors’ Retreat” also shows that the collaboration between dramas and entertainment shows, in which PD Na Young-seok and director Shin Won-ho previously combined “Youth Over Flowers” and “Reply” series, has recently become another entertainment trend. For example, “Unexpected Journey” follows the process of Youn Yuh-jung staying in the U.S. to participate in the Academy Awards as a presenter.

Programs such as “Europe Outside the Tent”, where “Confidential Assignment 2: International” Yoo Hae-jin and Jin Sun-kyu gather to go on a camping trip in Switzerland and Italy, can be seen as one of these collaborations. In other words, entertainment programs were once used briefly to promote dramas and movies. However, programs with fusion concept through collaboration are now in full swing.

Of course, there are criticisms that entertainment shows strengthen “casting” rather than challenging attempts such as experimenting with new formats, but in an era when fandoms are emerging in content like these days, “multi-use” of content that can encompass them seems to be a natural choice. “Young Actors’ Retreat” is an entertainment program that highlights the freshness of “youth” at the forefront while responding to these demands. A program that makes you feel better just by looking at the bright sides of the casts who dealt with incidents rather than the incidents that took place there themselves. If you are a real fan, you can’t help but smile.
