“Our Blues” Lee Byung-hun: “In some episodes, I appear like I’m the main character, and in some episodes, I only appear briefly… That’s fun”

“We are the protagonists in our own lives”

tvN’s Saturday-Sunday drama “Our Blues” (written by Noh Hee-kyung/directed by Kim Kyu-tae, Kim Yang-hee, Lee Jung-mook/planned by Studio Dragon/produced by GTist), which premiered on April 9th, left a different first impression on the small screen as an omnibus drama. With the appearance of Lee Byung-hun, Shin Min-ah, Cha Seung-won, Lee Jung-eun, Han Ji-min, Kim Woo-bin, Kim Hye-ja, Go Doo-shim and Uhm Jung-hwa, episodes 1 and 2 opened with the episode “Han-soo and Eun-hee” in which Cha Seung-won and Lee Jung-eun were the main characters.

Episodes 1 and 2 are the story of friends Choi Han-soo (played by Cha Seung-won) and Jeong Eun-hee (played by Lee Jung-eun), who met for the first time in 20 years, but they were not the only ones appearing. Jeju’s five-day market and Pureung Village’s people were introduced vividly, and the appearance of the main characters in other episodes was characteristically included, attracting interest.

Truck maker Lee Dong-seok (Lee Byung-hun), Min Seon-ah (Shin Min-ah), who left a scar on him 7 years ago, Lee Young-ok (Han Ji-min), a haenyeo who seems to have a secret, and a captain who has a crush on her. Jung In-kwon (Park Ji-hwan) – Bang Ho-sik (Choi Young-jun), fathers who hate each other, and Jung Hyun (Bae Hyun-sung) – Bang Young-joo (Roh Yoon-seo), their children who secretly develop love for each other. Kang Ok-dong (Kim Hye-ja), who lives with her son Lee Dong-seok like a stranger, and Hyeon Chun-hee (Go Doo-shim), a mercantile woman who has worked for over 60 years. The main characters in other episodes came out like people around them and built their own story bases.

This omnibus format shows the entire message of “Our Blues”. Screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung said, “Aren’t we the main characters of our own lives?” heralding the message of a drama where everyone is the main character. The main characters for each story are different, and the stories vary from episode to episode. In response, the names of the episode’s main characters appeared first in the opening title, drawing viewers’ attention. It will be another fun for the viewers to see the opening title that will vary from episode to episode.

The fact that Jeju is the background which connects the main characters also added to the unique omnibus charm of “Our Blues“. Screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung said, “I felt like I was seeing Korean’s disappearing warm sentiment again through the culture of Jeju people, who regard us as one of them and not others,” referring to Jeju’s Goindang culture (the concept that everyone is related to each other). As shown by this, in the first and second episodes of “Our Blues”, the relationship between the characters who build affection in a village was naturally revealed, with Lee Dong-seok (Lee Byung-hun) joining the alumni group of his seniors and Park Jung-joon (Kim Woo-bin) taking care of his drunken brothers.

At the production presentation, Lee Byung-hun said about filming the omnibus-format drama, “In some episodes, I appear like I’m the main character, and in some episodes, I only appear briefly, which was fun. It felt like the layers of the drama were piling up. I felt like the camera was only moving around among the people who really live there,” he said. The omnibus drama “Our Blues” shows the lives of various main characters and tells the story of people living their lives. Expectations are higher for its future stories.

Meanwhile, tvN’s drama “Our Blues” airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9:10 p.m.
