Opening Week Box Office of ‘The Marvels’ Starring Park Seo-joon Expected to Be Marvel’s All-Time Low

‘The Marvels’ disappoints with a low opening in North America, Marvel Studios’ worst ever

The sequel to Hollywood blockbuster ‘Captain Marvel,’ titled ‘The Marvels,’ is anticipated to achieve the lowest opening week box office performance in the history of Disney’s Marvel Studios, according to reports from Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and other U.S. film industry sources on November 11th.

According to the Box Office Mojo, ‘The Marvels’ generated ticket sales of $21.5 million on its opening day in the North American region.

Based on this opening day performance, industry insiders predict that the film will record an estimated revenue of $47-52 million in North America over the first three days, marking a level lower than previous Marvel Studio films with underwhelming performances.

Notably, the film’s projected opening week revenue is expected to be even lower than the historically weakest opening week performance of the Marvel film ‘The Incredible Hulk’ (2008), which earned $55.4 million in its first week in North America.

Deadline reported a lowered international opening week box office estimate for ‘The Marvels’ at around $60 million, resulting in a global opening week box office projection of $110-115 million

Both audience ratings and reviews for ‘The Marvels’ are less favorable compared to previous Marvel films. CinemaScore’s audience rating gave the film a ‘B,’ while Rotten Tomatoes recorded a freshness score of 62% (out of 100).

Hollywood Reporter evaluated that the film’s underwhelming performance may be attributed to audience fatigue with superhero genre films.

Despite receiving attention from Asian fans thanks to Park Seo-joon‘s Hollywood debut, ‘The Marvels’ faced criticism for his limited screen time, appearing only after about an hour into the film with a role of around five minutes.
