NewJeans will perform at the Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs), making them the first K-pop girl group to do so
The Billboard Music Awards announced on November 8th (local time) through their official social media that NewJeans has been selected as a performer for the 2023 Billboard Music Awards.
NewJeans, who will be performing at the Billboard Music Awards for the first time since their debut, is expected to showcase performances of ‘Super Shy’ and ‘OMG,’ both of which entered Billboard Hot 100 this year.
Among the top three music awards in the US, including the Grammy Awards and the American Music Awards, the only K-pop group that has performed at the Billboard Music Awards is BTS.
NewJeans is the first K-pop girl group and the fastest K-pop group overall, debuting just 1 year and 3 months ago, to be selected as a performer at the Billboard Music Awards.
NewJeans had a strong presence on the Billboard charts this year. With their second mini-album ‘Get Up’ released in July, they set a new record by achieving the fastest No. 1 on the main album chart Billboard 200 among K-pop groups after their debut.
They also had five songs (‘OMG,’ ‘Ditto,’ ‘Super Shy,’ ‘ETA,’ ‘Cool With You’) enter Hot 100. On the Global 200 chart, which covers over 200 countries/regions worldwide, three songs (‘OMG,’ ‘Ditto,’ ‘Super Shy’) made it to the ‘Top 10,’ and on Global (Excluding U.S.), four songs (‘OMG,’ ‘Ditto,’ ‘Super Shy,’ ‘ETA’) achieved the same.
Based on these achievements, NewJeans has become the artist with the most nominations in K-pop at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards. They are nominated in a total of four categories (‘Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Artist,’ ‘Top Global K-pop Artist,’ ‘Top Global K-pop Song,’ ‘Top K-pop Album,’ including multiple nominations for ‘Top Global K-pop Song,’ making it a total of five nominations.
In particular, in the ‘Top Billboard Global (Excl. U.S.) Artist’ category, they are the only K-pop group nominee, competing alongside top Western artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, and Bad Bunny.
