NewJeans proves popularity rooted in the US, changes the game for Kpop girl groups?

Girl group NewJeans are demonstrating astonishing achievements in the US without any specific local activities.

According to NewJeans’ agency, ADOR, all 6 songs from NewJeans‘ 2nd mini-album “Get Up”, which was released on the 21st, entered the Spotify US “Daily Top Songs” chart on that day. The rankings were as follows: “Super Shy” at 10th place, “Cool with You” at 16th place, “NewJeans” at 20th place, “ETA” at 22nd place, “ASAP” at 25th place, and “Get Up” at 32nd place.

For the first time, all tracks from a Kpop girl group’s album have secured spots within the top 50 of this chart. On the next day (July 22nd), most of their songs also ranked high on the Spotify US “Daily Top Songs” chart.

Spotify is the world’s largest music streaming platform, and its data is reflected in the US Billboard “Hot 100” rankings. Therefore, it is considered an excellent indicator to gauge global music trends. In addition, NewJeans proves popularity rooted in the US through these charts, raising expectations for the group to achieve further remarkable feats in the future.

Indeed, NewJeans’ title track “Super Shy”, pre-released on July 7th, steadily climbed the chart, reaching its peak at 9th place on July 13th. Subsequently, “Super Shy” recorded its highest rank on the latest Billboard “Hot 100” chart, securing the 66th spot. It also reached 2nd place on the Billboard “Global 200” chart.

With “Ditto”, “OMG”, and “Super Shy” preceding it, global fans are now focusing on NewJeans’ fourth and fifth Billboard “Hot 100” entries. As of the moment, NewJeans is the second Kpop girl group to have two songs simultaneously charting on the “Hot 100”, and BTS is the only Kpop artist to have three or more songs charting simultaneously. Now, just after celebrating their one-year debut anniversary, NewJeans is garnering attention for potentially adding meaningful accomplishments to Kpop history.

NewJeans’ physical album performance is also promising. Their 2nd mini-album “Get Up” has already surpassed 1.2 million sales, rapidly filling the pre-order quantity of 1.72 million. Though the sales figure in the US market has not been revealed yet, considering NewJeans’ elevated global standing over the past year, this is interpreted as a positive sign of their entry into the Billboard “Hot 100.”

In addition, the group’s music has shown a greater impact over time, with songs like “Attention”, “Hype Boy”, “OMG”, and “Ditto” showing a continued popularity. Additionally, NewJeans has announced full-fledged international activities. They are scheduled to perform at the US’ music festival “Lollapalooza Chicago” and Japan’s “Summer Sonic 2023” next month. This will undoubtedly increase NewJeans’ influence in the mainstream pop market.

In Korea, NewJeans already dominates major music charts. “Super Shy” has held the top spot on Melon, Genie, and other daily charts for about two weeks. The second title track from their mini-album, “ETA”, and the prologue track “NewJeans”, also ranked 1st to 3rd consecutively on Bugs for two days. This indicates the potential for a “NewJeans vs. NewJeans” situation on the charts

On the other hand, NewJeans secured a trophy for “Super Shy” on the 23rd broadcast of SBS’s “Inkigayo”. At the same time, they won 1st place on MBC’s “Show! Music Core” and Mnet’s “M Countdown.” This, however, only marks the beginning of NewJeans’ collection of Korean music show trophies.
