NewJeans’ ‘Hype boy’ Earns Third Consecutive ‘Platinum’ Certification from Japan Record Association

NewJeans achieves another ‘Platinum’ certification from Japan Record Association

On the 27th of last month, according to the Japan Record Association, NewJeans received a ‘Platinum’ certification for their song ‘Hype boy,’ which surpassed 100 million cumulative streams as of August 2023. This marks NewJeans’ third ‘Platinum’ certification, following ‘Ditto’ (May 2023) and ‘OMG’ (July 2023). The Japan Record Association awards certifications every month based on cumulative streaming numbers, categorizing them as Gold (over 50 million streams), Platinum (over 100 million streams), and Diamond (over 500 million streams).

‘Hype boy’ is one of the triple title tracks from NewJeans’ debut album released in August of the previous year. It became a mega-hit with numerous parodies and memes circulating on social media, receiving immense love. The song continues to be popular both domestically and internationally, recently surpassing 4 billion streams on the world’s largest music streaming platform, Spotify.

Notably, NewJeans has achieved three ‘Platinum’ certifications from the Japan Record Association this year alone, and they also quickly reached 100 million streams on Oricon for a single song (‘Ditto’) among overseas female artists. Their remarkable achievements, even before their official debut in Japan, raise high expectations for their future endeavors.

Furthermore, NewJeans is set to release ‘GODS,’ the theme song for Riot Games’ ‘2023 LoL World Championship,’ on October 4th at 2 PM. The ‘LoL World Championship’ is a prestigious esports event, and NewJeans will be the first K-pop group to sing the theme song for this tournament as a full group, adding to the excitement surrounding their upcoming activities.
