NewJeans and IVE filled BTS’ hiatus “This year’s K-pop market = woman power”

Female artists dominated 8 out of the top 10 songs, according to a comprehensive survey of domestically distributed music by Genie Music from Jan 1st, 2023 to Dec 10th, 2023.

Notably, the activities of NewJeans and IVE stood out. NewJeans’ “Ditto” and “Hype Boy” claimed the 1st and 2nd spots, respectively, while IVE’s “I AM” secured the 3rd spot.

Apart from these, NewJeans also claimed the 5th (“OMG”) and 10th (“Attention”) positions, while IVE’s “Kitsch” and “After Like” ranked 6th and 7th, respectively. Additionally, (G)I-DLE’s “Queencard” contributed by securing the 8th spot. The remaining two spots in the top ten were taken by Younha’s “Event Horizon” (4th) and American pop singer Charlie Puth’s “I Don’t Think That I Like Her” (9th).

Genie Music mentioned, “For the past ten years, girl groups that topped the annual Genie chart include TWICE in 2016 (Cheer Up) and (G)I-DLE in 2022 (Tomboy) and NewJeans this year (Ditto). Girl groups are showing increasing strength.” They highlighted that NewJeans occupied the daily chart’s 1st place for a total of 178 days this year with songs like “Ditto”, “Hype Boy”, “Super Shy” and “ETA”.

Even when expanding the scope to the top 20, the dominance of “woman power” continues. IVE’s “LOVE DIVE” (12th), LE SSERAFIM’s “ANTIFRAGILE” (13th) and “UNFORGIVEN” (20th), aespa’s “Spicy” (14th), Jisoo’s “Flower” (15th) and NewJeans’ “Super Shy” (18th) make up 70% of the top 20, confirming the trend.

It is noteworthy that not a single boy group song made it into the top 10, which is unusual. The absence of boy group songs in the annual chart is attributed to the impossibility of full-group activities for BTS after Jin’s military enlistment in Dec 2022. The highest-ranking male soloist is Parc Jae-jung’s “Let’s Say Goodbye” (11th). Among boy groups, SEVENTEEN’s unit group BSS gained the 23rd place with “Fighting”.

Classifying by genre, the most popular genre in the top 100 was dance, with a total of 33 songs scattered throughout the chart. Following were ballads (14 songs), pop songs (13 songs), rap/hip-hop (10 songs) and rock (9 songs). The most popular foreign artist on the domestic chart was Charlie Puth, receiving love not only for “I Don’t Think That I Like Her” (9th) but also for “Dangerously” (19th) and “That’s Hilarious” (25th).

A Genie Music representative analyzed, “Girl groups received attention throughout the year, and their predominant genre, dance, became the mainstream. The higher rankings of male solo artists such as Parc Jae-jung and Charlie Puth compared to boy groups are also characteristic of 2023.”
