New Idol Program Launched with North Korean Defectors as Participants?

35 participants from various walks of life, including North Korean defectors, were gathered for the idol program “MA1”.

On May 8, the production presentation of KBS 2TV’s idol program “MA1” was held. “MA1” is a global idol debut project launched by KBS after about 6 years since “The Unit”.

Unlike other auditions, participants without affiliated agencies are appearing. Especially, among them, there are popular TikTokers and even North Korean defectors, raising further curiosity.

Director Ra Hyun-woong also emphasized the program’s focus on “growth,” stating, “We want to escape from the completed idol. They are raw kids. We struggled with how to do the final ending pose, and we had to shoot multiple times. They are still not familiar and not ripe. I hope rather than focusing too much on perfection, we can watch them grow together.”

The director also mentioned the activity plans for those who will debut after such growth. Although the number of debut members has not yet been decided, the post-debut activity period is “infinite”.

Director Ra commented, “Since they are boys without affiliation, if they become a debut group here, I think the activity period itself will be infinite. If they continue to be loved and go on, they can go even for 10 years. Trainees have to go back to their respective agencies, so there are limitations on the activity period, but if we love them well, I think we can create a group that can work together for a long time.”

Meanwhile, “MA1” will premiere on the 15th at 10:10 PM (KST).
