Netizens React to Red Velvet’s Wendy Saying Dance Challenges are “Scary”

Red Velvet’s Wendy and Seulgi revealed their true feelings about the “dance challenge culture” with GOT7’s Bambam

On December 15, a video titled “Red Velvet GOT7’s Latte Talk” was published on the YouTube channel “Bam Home” of GOT7 member Bambam.

In this video, Red Velvet members Seulgi and Wendy visited Bambam’s house. It is known that all three of them debuted in 2014, and will be celebrating their 10th year anniversary soon.

During the conversation, Bambam asked if Red Velvet got a lot of requests to do “dance challenges” during their recent comeback with “Chill Kill”, to which Seulgi nodded and responded, “The culture is all about challenges now!”

Then, when Bambam asked if the Red Velvet members find the K-pop dance challenge culture to be a little excessive sometimes, Seulgi agreed, while Wendy confessed that she finds this culture “scary”.

“At some point, instead of being fun, it became like an obligation”, Bambam also said

In response, Wendy expressed, “For me, I really want to do them. But what if I can’t do the other team’s dance properly? I’m so afraid of that. I’d be so sorry”, adding that idols have to learn the choreography in a short time, making it difficult.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • Short-form videos like dance challenges spread well, so they (the idols) have to do them anyway, it’s sad…
  • It’s true, they already have to prepare for their own comebacks without a break, and now they also have to learn others’ choreographies in a short time, film dance challenges a few times, then upload the videos… It must be burdensome…
  • As the number of challenges increase, I have grown tired of them….
  • It’s extra work for the idols since it’s necessary for trend… I can see why they don’t like challenges
  • Due to the “dance challenge culture”, the quality of choreographies have decreased. In the past, we used to have intense dances for 3 minutes, but now most are just easy-to-replicate moves and stagnant formations that are prioritized for challenges
  • Dance challenge videos are so short but they must take a lot of time to film, it’s quite annoying
