Netizens re-examine Youtuber Oliver’s reason for not living in Korea, “I received malicious comments, death threats, etc.”

Netizens brought up the story of Youtuber Oliver giving up life in Korea and moving to the US with his family.

On July 29th last year, Oliver uploaded on his YouTube channel a video titled “Why is Oliver living in the US despite saying he loves Korea?”.

That day, Oliver revealed that “money” was the first reason why he decided to live in the US, not in Korea. He said, “At that time, I suffered financial difficulties. My earnings from YouTube were not enough to buy a house and I couldn’t even afford to pay the monthly rent”, adding “I worked as a native English teacher at a school for about seven years but the need for that job gradually decreased”.

Oliver then mentioned “stalking” as the decisive reason why he left Korea and moved to the US. He said, “When I announced my marriage through YouTube, people not only left malicious comments about us but they also tried to find out my personal information, such as my address and the location of the gym I went to”, adding “Not only malicious commenters, dangerous stalkers also emerged. I wanted to protect my wife and did not want to reveal my identity”.

At that time, he received many negative comments, such as “I’m gonna kill him”, “Let’s find his address”, “Who wants to kill him together with me?”, “I bought a knife”, “I saw Oliver somewhere”, etc. Oliver confessed, “I should have lived in a house with tight security, but I couldn’t do it and had to endure fears every day”.

Oliver released photos showing his front door with double locks, chains, and ropes. In this regard, he explained, “The officetel where my wife and I lived after getting married did not have good security. I used a chain because I was afraid that someone would open the locks and break in”, adding “It was difficult for us to walk around outside, too. It was a situation in which I might encounter dangerous incidents outside. I did not have a safe home and couldn’t manage to buy one within 1-2 years. Everything was just paralyzed”.

Hearing the story, netizens expressed sympathy with the seriousness of the issue. Some commented, “Just looking at the recent knife attacks, I can understand how serious it is”, “Many people want to attack YouTubers and broadcasters”, “Imagine how terrifying it is to live in a foreign country but receiving death threats and harassment”, “I’m shocked knowing he had to live in a house with so many chains and locks”, etc.

Meanwhile, Oliver is a French-Germany Youtuber living in Texas, the US.

He worked as an English teacher in Korea and married his Korean wife Manim. The two have a daughter named Cherry.
