Netizens Re-examine Stars Rejected By JYP: IU, CL, BTS’s J-Hope And More

As singer EJel talked about being criticized by Park Jin-young, netizens recalled the talents that JYP has missed

“Sing Again 3” TOP 7 appeared on the February 17th broadcast of JTBC’s “Knowing Bros” and EJel introduced herself as a “professional auditioner”.

EJel shared, “I joined JYP, YG, SM, and Mystic auditions but failed”, adding “When I was a middle school student, I was street cast by SM on my way home. I couldn’t prepare a dance so I only clapped when they played a song at the audition. I guess I failed because of my posture”.

She continued, “I felt hurt by Park Jin-young’s words once”, adding “I appeared on ‘K-pop Star Season 6’ and received evaluations from the judges whom I really respect. They stopped me in the middle of the performance and Judge Park Jin-young was the first person to comment. He said, ‘You’re so bad at singing. You can’t sing. It’s like you’re imitating someone’. His words made me think that I was not talented and I even thought about giving up on music”.

EJel added, “Later, I did a cover of ‘Hype Boy’ and there was a comment saying, ‘At this point, Park Jin-young must have done 5 somersaults’. As a person who was criticized by him, I felt so good reading the comment”.

Before EJel, JYP Entertainment had rejected many talented stars and IU is among them. Expressing his regrets, Park Jin-young once said, “I will find the audition staff who eliminated IU and imposed a severe punishment on them”.

Chungha was also a JYP trainee. AOA’s Choa and EXID’s Hani also spent years training under JYP Entertainment.

2NE1’s CL developed her dream of becoming a singer in JYP with Wonder Girls’s Sunye and Secret’s Jung Hana. CL trained at the same time with 2PM and 2AM members but she eventually made her debut with 2NE1 under YG Entertainment.

Appearing on IU’s YouTube channel content, BTS’s J-Hope shared, “When I was in Grade 3 of middle school, I passed JYP open audition”. In addition, Hyolyn, HIGHLIGHT’s Yoon Doo-joon, Yang Yo-seop, and Lee Gi-kwang were also former JYP trainees.

When asked about his feelings after missing so many talents, Park Jin-young honestly said, “I can’t even watch the TV these days. I don’t know why I did that”, adding “It’s such a bummer knowing I’ve missed the chance to have so many stars. Of course, being in our company doesn’t guarantee that they will become this successful. They actually succeeded after meeting other producers and music.”
