Netizens Debate Over the Abundance of K-pop Weekly Music Shows

In Korea, there are up to six music shows in a week. Is this too many?

In Korea, there are six prominent music shows that dominate the airwaves: M! Countdown, Show Champion, The Show, Music Bank, Music Core, and Inkigayo. While this offers numerous opportunities for artists to showcase their talent, the frequency of these shows has left many viewers feeling “oversaturated.”

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential overshadowing of other programs, as well as the surprisingly low popularity ratings of some shows.

Another issue that arises from the multitude of music shows is the privilege enjoyed by artists under large entertainment companies.

These companies often have the power to select the most popular music shows for promoting their artists. On the other hand, rookies from smaller or mid-sized companies face limited options, with some only able to secure a spot on less popular shows, making them struggle to gain visibility and recognition.

Opinions among netizens are divided over the abundance of music shows. On one hand, many view this as a testament to the current growth of K-pop. They believe that these shows exemplify K-pop’s expanding global reach, attracting fans from around the world who actively participate in voting for their favorite groups.

The multitude of music shows does offer certain advantages for idols. The increased number of platforms provides them with enhanced opportunities to promote their music and connect with fans.

Consequently, groups have a higher chance of increasing their recognition among both domestic and global audiences. The exposure gained from music show performances can significantly contribute to the popularity of K-pop artists.
