Netflix’s Comedy Series “Chicken Nugget” Criticized By Saudi Arabian Viewers? Why?

Netflix’s original series “Chicken Nugget” is facing a backlash from viewers in Saudi Arabian because of its content

Chicken Nugget” is based on a webtoon of the same name. It’s a comedy mystery story about a father trying to transform his daughter, who accidentally turned into a chicken nugget after entering a mysterious machine, into a human again with the help of a man who has a crush on his daughter.

This is a new film by director Lee Byung-han who created “Extreme Job”. Due to its absurd and unrealistic story, Korean viewers gave divided responses.

However, the drama received an unusually low IMDB rating of 5.0 in Saudi Arabia. It has been reported that the majority of viewers from Middle Eastern, especially in Saudi Arabia, were angry due to a detail in episode 10 so they are pouring harsh criticism on “Chicken Nugget”.

Accordingly, a scene in episode 10 of “Chicken Nugget” is said to have mocked the Saudi Arabian royal family. In particular, this scene shows the Saudi Crown Prince and his wife asking for a ticket to a superstar’s concert.

The conversation was portrayed as follows:

  • “The House of Saud expressed disappointment. They asked for a couple of tickets for the Crown Prince and his wife”
  • “But there’s a political and economic side that we can’t ignore”.
  • “Give them the back-row seats”.

In response to such content, Saudi Arabian fans expressed frustration that the drama disparaged the royal families in their country.

Regarding this controversy, Korean netizens pointed out that it reminded them of a similar case in the past when the JTBC’s drama “King the Land” production team had to apologize for insulting the Arab culture. Back then, “King the Land” even issued an apology letter.
