The fantasy rom-com Genie, Make a Wish, released in full on October 3 with 13 episodes, follows a genie who awakens after a thousand years only to meet Ga-young, a woman devoid of emotions, as they embark on a whimsical journey centered around three wishes. Written by hitmaker Kim Eun-sook and starring Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, the series was strategically launched at the start of the week-long Chuseok holiday, fueling high expectations.
However, responses have been mixed. Some viewers criticized the show’s “childish dialogue” and “weak humor,” saying they quit after just one episode. Comments like “I expected more but was disappointed,” “I dropped it halfway,” and “I turned it off after episode 1” reflect the frustration of those who found the series underwhelming.
On the other hand, fans praised its lighthearted charm and star power, calling it perfect for passing time. Positive reactions included: “It feels like watching a Suzy photo book, I can’t stop watching,” and “The most entertaining drama I’ve watched recently.” Despite these, negative reviews appear to outweigh the favorable ones.
Behind the scenes, the show also faced production turbulence. Originally helmed by director Lee Byeong-heon, he stepped down mid-production, with Ahn Gil-ho, who previously worked with Kim Eun-sook on The Glory, taking over the latter half. Notably, neither director’s name appears in the end credits, leaving only Kim Eun-sook credited for the script.

Even with polarized reviews and directing controversies, the buzz remains intense. The big question now is whether Genie, Make a Wish can overcome criticism and turn its holiday-timed release into long-term success.
