Ma Dong-seok was voted the top movie actor who shone in 2023
According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea from November 2nd to December 4th, asking 1,769 people aged 13 and over nationwide (excluding Jeju Island) who the most active movie actor in 2023 was, Ma Dong-seok, who appeared in “The Roundup: No Way Out”, took the first place with 18.0%.
Following him, Lee Byung-hun (14.6%) took second place, and Song Kang-ho (11.1%) secured the third spot.
The “Crime City” series is a crime action film series planned for a total of 8 installments, with Ma Dong-seok directly participating in production, planning and starring. After the first part in 2017, the second part in 2022 and the third part in 2023, the fourth part is scheduled to be released in May next year.
In particular, “The Roundup” and “The Roundup: No Way Out” each became the only 10-million-admission movies last year and this year, showing the charm of Detective Ma Seok-do confronting powerful villains.
Ma Dong-seok ranked in the top 10 of “Movie actor of the Year” for the first time in 2016. Since then, he has been in the top tier for 7 consecutive years. He topped the list in 2018 after presenting works like “Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days” and “Champion”.
In second place is Lee Byung-hun (14.6%). This year, he played the role of Yeong-tak, the interim resident representative of the Imperial Apartments, in the movie “Concrete Utopia”.
He captivated viewers with his passionate performance as Captain of the United States Marine Corps Eugene Choi, who has a sad past, in tvN’s 2018 drama “Mr. Sunshine”.
Subsequently, he has been meeting Korean viewers frequently through works such as the 2020 movie “The Man Standing Next”, tvN’s 2021 drama “Our Blues” and the 2022 movie “Emergency Declaration.
Lee Byung-hun took first place in “Movie actor of the Year” in 2009 with “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” and in 2012 with “Masquerade”.
In third place is Song Kang-ho (11.1%). After receiving much attention last year for winning the Best Actor award at the 75th Cannes Film Festival for his role as Sang-hyeon in director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s film “Broker”, he returned this year as director Kim in the movie “Cobweb”, which was released around Chuseok.
The movie “Cobweb” is about director Kim, who is obsessed with the fact that the ending of the movie Cobweb, which was filmed in the 1970s, would be better if remade. It is a film that depicts the sad and funny things that happen while filming under conditions. Although it failed at the box office due to its somewhat maniacal subject matter, Song Kang-ho’s performance shone brightly.
Song Kang-ho has left a strong impression in every movie, such as “The Attorney”, “The Throne”, “The Age of Shadows” and “A Taxi Driver”, and gained worldwide recognition with the movie “Parasite” in 2019.
Since 2007, Song Kang-ho has been the No.1 most chosen actor in the survey every year (5 times), even in years when he has no released films.
Hwang Jung-min (10.1%) and Jung Woo-sung (6.6%), who played Chun Doo-gwang and Lee Tae-shin in the movie “12.12: The Day”, recorded 4th and 7th places, respectively. Kim Hye-soo (7.2%) and Jo In-sung (4.9%), who played Jo Chun-ja and Sergeant Kwon in the movie “Smugglers”, ranked 6th and 8th, respectively.
Yoo Hae-jin, who appeared in the movie “Honey Sweet”, and Ha Jung-woo, who appeared in the movies “Road to Boston” and “Ransomed”, tied for 10th place (over 2.9%).
Lee Jung-jae (6.5%), who became a global star with Netflix’s web drama “Squid Game” in 2021, and Son Suk-ku (3.6%), who appeared in the movie “The Roundup” last year, entered the top 10 without new movie releases this year.
While the top tier of “Talent of the Year” is often dominated by actresses, the top tier of “Movie actor of the Year” has been dominated by male actors for a long time.
In 2007, Jeon Do-yeon topped the list with 49.7%, and in 2008, Son Ye-jin (11.3%), Kim Hye-soo (7.4%) and Jeon Do-yeon (7.3%) each recorded 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places, fiercely competing in the top tier. Since then, the highest ranking based on actresses is 2nd place by Youn Yuh-jung in 2021.
