The long-awaited live-action Naruto movie is officially moving forward. Lionsgate has begun a global casting call to find actors for the film’s three central characters: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. Casting for additional major characters will be announced at a later date.
Applicants for the lead roles must be between 16 and 20 years old, possess strong English-language skills, and have experience or potential in action performance.
The adaptation will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
In a statement shared on social media, Cretton said it is an honor to bring Masashi Kishimoto’s beloved story to the big screen in live-action form. “Kishimoto Masashi’s story has inspired generations of fans around the world. I’m honored to bring his world and characters to life on screen and excited to begin a global search for Team 7.”
Original creator Masashi Kishimoto said the Hollywood adaptation still feels “like a miracle.” The manga artist added that he is thrilled Cretton is directing the project and hopes to discover talented actors who can faithfully bring his iconic characters to life.
Casting in North America will be overseen by Carmen Cuba Casting, the acclaimed casting team behind projects including Netflix’s Stranger Things. In South Korea, local casting will be handled by Soo Kim Company.
Created by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999 and follows Naruto Uzumaki’s journey from an outcast ninja to becoming Hokage. The series has sold more than 250 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga franchises in history and spawning multiple anime series, films, novels, and video games.
