South Korea’s Joint Investigation Headquarters for Drug Crimes announced that it indicted 12 suspects following a four-month investigation into illegal marijuana cultivation. Six of those charged have been detained pending trial.
Among the suspects is a member of a hip-hop group who previously appeared on a music competition program. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the individual’s identity.
According to prosecutors, the suspect allegedly cultivated three marijuana plants at his residence between May 2025 and May 2026. He is also accused of possessing approximately 155.9 grams of marijuana. The investigation also led to charges against several other individuals, including a freelance music instructor, a composer, and an English teacher.
Investigators said they analyzed customs import records to determine when cultivation activities began before tracking the movements of suspected accomplices.
In May, authorities simultaneously raided three cultivation sites, arresting suspects who allegedly attempted to destroy evidence. Officials stated that the investigation was carried out in cooperation with customs authorities and other government agencies.
Authorities pledged to continue strengthening enforcement efforts to prevent illegal drugs from spreading into everyday communities, particularly among young people.
