“Narco-Saints” Chang Chen’s subordinate is a singer who sang a hit song that all Koreans know

Netflix’s drama “Narco-Saints” depicts an ordinary entrepreneur who has no choice but to risk his life in joining the secret mission of government agents to capture a Korean drug lord operating in Suriname.

This drama is based on the true story of Jo Bong-haeng, who lived in Suriname from the late 1990s to the early 2000s and ran a large-scale drug trafficking organization. It is gaining huge popularity thanks to its dramatic storyline. According to the Netflix TV series ranking released by FlixPatrol, “Narco-Saints” ranks 4th among Netflix’s TV series as of Sep 18th.

It is maintaining the No.1 spot in 8 countries including Korea, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Morocco. As it is so popular, attention is being paid to the actors’ unique backgrounds. Earlier, the background of Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, who plays the notorious Chinatown boss Chen Zhen, was revealed.

He appeared in Brown Eyes’ “Already One Year” music video, so any Korean who has been to karaoke must have seen it at least once. However, besides Chang Chen, there is another actor who can make us react “Ah~ that person?”.

On Sep 18th, a behind-the-scenes commentary of the actors who appeared in “Narco-Saints” was uploaded on the YouTube channel “Netflix Korea”. Director Yoon Jong-bin, actors Park Hae-soo, Ha Jung-woo, Hwang Jung-min, Jo Woo-jin and Yoo Yeon-seok were present on this day.

Director Yoon said, “I tried to recruit Chinese actors as Chen Zhen’s subordinates, but I couldn’t bring them to Korea due to the COVID-19 situation.” In the end, director Yoon searched for Chinese-speaking Korean actors who studied in Shaolin Temple and Shanghai.

One of them was a theater actor who was Park Hae-soo’s college junior. Park Hae-soo explained, “That big friend is a junior who studied theater at my university.” Another actor who took on the role of Chen Zhen’s subordinate was Song Ho-beom of the dance group “One Two”.

One Two is a group consisting of two members Song Ho-beom and Oh Chang-hoon. They debuted in 2003 with the song “Now, Hips”. Song Ho-beom was the one who made the whole nation hum with easy and addictive lyrics “Wave your hands from side to side above your head then go back and forth”.

Song Ho-beom, who made his first acting challenge through “Narco-Saints”, received rave reviews from fellow actors, “He has a kind face, but when the camera rolls, the middle of his forehead changes.”
