Actress Nana (After School) and her mother have been cleared of any wrongdoing after injuring a man who broke into their home in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, while wielding a knife. Authorities have officially recognized their actions as legitimate self-defense.
On November 22, Guri Police confirmed they would be forwarding the suspect, a man in his 30s, to the prosecution on November 24 for charges of aggravated robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
The incident sparked public attention regarding whether the injuries the suspect sustained during the altercation would be considered excessive or justified. According to police, the man broke into Nana’s home around 6 a.m. on November 15, armed with a knife, and attempted to rob and harm the actress and her mother.

A struggle ensued in which the suspect suffered a laceration to his jaw, reportedly caused by his own weapon during the scuffle. Nana and her mother managed to subdue him and called the police. Despite the injury he sustained, investigators concluded that the response from Nana and her mother fell under Article 21, Paragraph 1 of Korea’s Criminal Act—defining justifiable self-defense in response to an ongoing and unlawful infringement.
A police representative stated, “There was an actual threat against the victims, and the injuries caused to the assailant were not severe or unjustified. After a comprehensive review, their actions qualify as legitimate self-defense, and thus, no charges have been filed against them.”
The suspect, identified as unemployed and not connected to Nana personally or as a stalker fan, attempted to appeal his detention on November 18, claiming police failed to read him his Miranda rights. The court rejected the appeal.

He later confessed to police that he believed the home would be empty and claimed he didn’t know a celebrity lived there, saying he acted out of financial desperation. He had used a ladder to scale the building and entered through an unlocked veranda door.
It was revealed that upon encountering Nana’s mother inside the home, the man attacked her by choking. Her scream woke Nana, who rushed to her mother’s aid. The mother-daughter duo wrestled the intruder to the ground, restraining his arms until police arrived.
Earlier, Nana’s agency, Sublime, confirmed that her mother had lost consciousness during the altercation due to severe injuries but has regained consciousness alongside Nana after receiving medical treatment.
Sublime also urged the public to refrain from spreading baseless rumors or invading the family’s privacy, warning that doing so could lead to serious secondary harm.

Nana debuted in 2009 with After School’s hit single Because of You, later rising to fame as part of sub-units Orange Caramel and After School Red. She has transitioned into acting, starring in projects like Netflix’s Mask Girl and the film Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy. Recently, she released her first solo album Seventh Heaven 16.
