Nam Myung Ryul explains his criticism toward Son Seok Gu’s ‘fake acting’ remark, “I only knew him as a celebrity”

Actor Nam Myung Ryul made additional comments about actor Son Seok Gu’s ‘fake acting’ remark.

On July 15th, a netizen left a comment on Nam Myung Ryul’s Instagram account, saying “To be honest, I think Nam Myung Ryul made such a comment about Son Seok Gu because he has had a negative perception of his junior actor. What if the remark was made by an actor he had no interest in or did not even care about? He would have been bothered by it and taken it more lightly. I hope he can be more generous.”

Replying to this comment, Nam Myung Ryul said, “It’s not like that at all. I only knew actor Son as a celebrity, and I don’t have any memory of seeing his acting. I saw him in some advertisements and thought, ‘Oh, he must be one of the young actors who are doing well these days’. That’s all about the image of actor Son I know.”

He continued, “Looking at his, I thought he looks like Park Hae Soo in his younger days. I hope you don’t misunderstand that I made my comment based on whether the actor is well-known or unknown. I only want to talk about ‘the essence of acting and the attitude that an actor should have to approach that essence?’”.

Later on the same day, he posted a photo, saying “Everyone expressed their opinions whether they like it or not, and only inconclusive arguments are rampant, so I’ll close the comment for a while. Can I ask for your understanding?”, then turned off the comment function on his SNS.

Earlier at the press conference of the play “Army on the Tree” held at LG Art Center, Seoul on June 27th, Son Seok Gu said, “In the script, it said ‘whispering love’, but in that case, they should have given us microphones. Being asked to not whisper for real on the stage made me feel like I was doing fake acting”, adding “That’s why I quit theater and turned to media acting, like dramas and movies”. He added, “When I came back to the stage, I wanted to experiment and see whether my acting style could work in theater.”

On July 14th, Nam Myung Ryul shared the article with Son Seok Gu’s remark about “fake acting” on Facebook and criticized, “Hahaha, I can only laugh. That arrogance”. After some netizens gave negative responses to his comment, Nam Myung Ryul posted on Instagram, saying, “Some criticize it as the words of an old man who can’t keep up with the times. However, it’s a story about the essence that will continue from Shakespeare’s era, now to the future. You guys!“

Meanwhile, Nam Myung Ryul is a veteran actor who has been acting for 31 years. He debuted in 1985 through a theater play and is currently starring in the play “Last Session”.
