Netflix has officially announced the premiere date for its upcoming original series The East Palace, marking the highly anticipated return of Nam Joo-hyuk in a dark fantasy mystery packed with supernatural elements. The eight-episode series is scheduled to debut exclusively on Netflix on July 17 and is already generating buzz thanks to its unique world-building, star-studded cast, and eerie premise.
The East Palace follows the story of Gucheon, portrayed by Nam Joo-hyuk, a mysterious figure capable of freely crossing between the human world and the realm of spirits. Alongside palace maid Saenggang, played by Noh Yoon-seo, Gucheon is tasked with investigating a sinister curse hidden within the Eastern Palace at the request of the king. As the pair delve deeper into the mystery, they uncover dark secrets lurking beyond the boundaries of reality, setting the stage for a suspense-filled supernatural adventure.

The upcoming drama brings together an impressive creative team. The series is directed by Choi Jung-gyu, known for his work on the acclaimed drama The Devil Judge, while the screenplay is written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, the writers behind the popular occult thriller The Guest. Their collaboration has heightened expectations for a richly detailed mythology and a suspenseful narrative that blends historical settings with supernatural horror.
In The East Palace, Nam Joo-hyuk steps into one of the most unconventional roles of his career. The actor portrays a character who navigates both the living world and the spirit realm, confronting ghosts and supernatural entities while unraveling the palace’s hidden curse.

The newly released promotional poster features Gucheon carrying a peach tree branch on his back while surrounded by ominous red energy. The tagline, “Beyond the boundaries of reality, into the world of spirits,” hints at the drama’s chilling atmosphere and expansive fantasy universe. Many fans are already anticipating a more mature and intense performance from the actor compared to his previous projects.
Rising star Roh Yoon-seo plays Saenggang, a palace maid gifted with the ability to hear the voices of spirits. Her partnership with Nam Joo-hyuk is expected to form the emotional and investigative core of the story as they work together to uncover the truth behind the curse.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Cho Seung-woo joins the cast as the king, adding further prestige to the production. Widely respected for his powerful performances across television, film, and theater, Cho Seung-woo’s involvement has significantly increased anticipation for the series.
Combining supernatural horror, palace intrigue, mystery, and fantasy, The East Palace stands out as one of Netflix Korea’s most ambitious projects of the year. With a compelling premise, a talented cast, and an experienced production team, the series is poised to attract both domestic and international viewers when it premieres.
