Netflix’s new Korean drama My Royal Enemy is quickly becoming one of the hottest May releases after premiering with strong ratings in South Korea and rising to No. 1 on Netflix’s program chart in Taiwan after only two episodes.
Starring Im Ji-yeon, Heo Nam-jun, Jang Seung-jo and Lee Se-hee, the drama tells a chaotic romance between “evil men and evil women” across past and present lives.
The story follows Kang Dan Shim, known in the Joseon era as a notorious royal consort who is condemned to death. However, instead of disappearing from history, her soul travels to the 21st century and enters the body of Shin Seo Sang, a once-famous child actress now struggling as an unknown performer.

Her second chance at life becomes even more complicated when she meets Cha Se Gye, a ruthless and unpredictable chaebol heir played by Heo Nam Jun. Their relationship begins like a battlefield, creating what viewers are calling one of the most intense “worst romances” of the year.
Im Ji Yeon’s transformation is one of the drama’s biggest highlights. After gaining massive popularity through The Glory, she continues challenging darker and more complex characters. In My Royal Enemy, she balances the bitterness of a wronged Joseon woman with the survival instincts of a modern actress trying to reclaim her fate.
Heo Nam Jun also draws attention as Cha Se Gye, a “madman” chaebol who is arrogant, cruel and dangerously charming. After recent roles in Sweet Home 2, Your Honor, When The Phone Rings and a special appearance in The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife, the actor is continuing his fast rise with another eye-catching lead role.

Jang Seung Jo adds more tension as Choi Moon Do, Cha Se Gye’s distant cousin and a key figure in the family’s business empire. Although he appears gentle and refined on the outside, his ambition and cold personality make him a dangerous rival in both love and power.
The drama also includes several supporting characters expected to create major twists, including Lee Se Hee as Seo Sang’s entertainment industry rival and Chae Seo An as a wealthy daughter pushed into a family-arranged blind date with Cha Se Gye.
Another major hook is the drama’s past-life mystery. In the Joseon timeline, Jang Seung Jo’s character appears to be the king who ordered Kang Dan Shim’s death, while Cha Se Gye’s past self once saved her when she was trapped and mistreated as a palace maid. This tangled connection raises questions about whether their modern romance is fate, revenge or tragedy repeating itself.

Directed by Han Tae Seop of Hot Stove League and written by Kang Hyun Joo of Soulmate, My Royal Enemy combines fantasy, reincarnation, palace intrigue and chaebol romance into a highly addictive setup.
With only two episodes released, the drama has already created strong buzz thanks to its bold characters, sharp chemistry and painful past-life storyline. New episodes of My Royal Enemy are released weekly on Netflix.
