“My Lovely Sam Soon” Kim Sun Ah changes up her image for “Queen of Masks”, rating remains bleak after the first week of airing

Kim Sun Ah returns to the small screen with the melodrama “Queen of Masks”.

On April 24th, “Queen of Masks”, starring Kim Sun Ah, premiered on Channel A. The drama marks the actress’ return to the drama scene with a spikier and stronger character. In the drama, she plays Do Jae Yi, a well-known human rights lawyer who takes the side of the weak, with 40,000 followers on social media. As an ambitious person, she is secretly in charge of the mayor’s office and is promised a position of successor. In bouncing between Do Jae Yi’s double lives, she carefully hides in the grey between good and evil, righteousness and stealthiness. The series reaches a turning point when a new male figure appears and accidentally draws her into the lives of four different women.

To play an entirely new type of character, Kim Sun Ah switched to a short hairstyle. She dances around different styles. When Jae Yi drops the facade of a lawyer in workwear, she takes on a spectrum of colors for her wardrobe.

Fans praised Sun Ah for renewing her image and acting for this comeback. The actress showed off versatility when she went from comedy to a melodrama with a political backdrop but did not struggle with her character. They also reserved some praise for Yoo Sun, one of the four main characters.

While the series has not upside or downside, the viewership rating was generally pessimistic. After the first week of airing, the rating stops at 1.5%, and struggles to create a buzz on fan community platforms. Hopefully, the drama can generate momentum in the near future.
