“My Dearest” vs “A Good Day To Be A Dog” : Different Achievements, Different Treatments From MBC

Although both are MBC’s dramas that airs at the same time, the popularity difference between the two drama is clear.

While this year’s most popular film, “My Dearest,” is being considered for expansion, “A Good Day To Be A Dog” is not even having reruns.

Currently, MBC hit the jackpot with “My Dearest.” The drama has achieved more than expected. There were some negative reactions towards its storyline until the fourth episode, but since the drama reached the part of the China-Korea war during the Joseon dynasty, it has been breaking its own rating records in every episode. The highest ratings soared to 12.2% after 10 episodes. In addition, both the work and the cast swept the top spot on popularity ranking list.

On the other hand, the drama “A Good Day To Be A Dog” is facing a different situation. This Wednesday drama has a 1%-level viewer rating since its first episode. The audience rating for the fourth episode, which aired on the 1st, was 1.7%, 0.2% less than the previous episode.

One of the reason is that “A Good Day To Be A Dog” aired once or twice in a row in the first week, followed by three episodes the following week and not broadcast the following week. It was not easy for the drama to have a fixed audience with this schedule.

The buzz that was raised by the ‘Cha Eun-woo effect’ in the first week of the broadcast is now also gone. According to FUNdex, a K-content topic analysis agency, the drama was not even listed in the top 10 in the TV-OTT hot topics in the fourth week of October. Cha Eun-woo and Park Kyu-young were also out of the top 10 in the drama actors’ popularity ranking. Therefore, it is hard to get a rerun on MBC. MBC has organized the rerun of “A Good Day To Be A Dog” only twice, at 1 a.m. on Sunday and 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday. It will only be re-run about five times on MBC Drama Net as well. Compared to “My Dearest” having more than 20 reruns per episode, this drama’s number of reruns is too poor.

From MBC’s point of view, it is natural to push for works that are more profitable. However, it is questionable whether MBC is not responsible for the polar results of “My Dearest,” which was heavily invested and promoted, and “A Good Day To Be A Dog,” which was ignored.
