MTV VMAs 2022’s saw another rise in viewership thanks to BLACKPINK’s appearance? 

Thanks to the presence of a star-studded lineup, fans were eager to tune in for the show. 

Preliminary statistics from Nielsen showed that the viewership for the MTV VMAs 2022 (MTV Video Music Awards) increased in live broadcasting and in two replays across different platforms.

Specifically, 3.9 million viewers watched the VMAs live this year on 12 cable channels from Paramount Global and the broadcasting network The CW. the number of viewers increased by 3% compared with 2021, with 3.7 million viewers. 

Paramount also revealed that the audiences also streamed content related to the Awards on television, online and social media platforms. In comparison to last year’s statistics, the figure went up by 14%, being the second year in the row with an increased viewership index.

Several sources contributed to this upward trend: the controversies between YUng Gravy and Addison Rae, the decision to make Johnny Depp, who just won the lawsuit against his ex-wife, to be the “Moonman”. This year also witnessed a soar to 79% viewership on social media. 

According to the analytics from Talkwalker, VMAs obtained 40 millions in social media engagement – a rise of 2 millions in comparison to last year. More noticeably, the statistics helped VMAs to overtake America’s most-watched event in two consecutive years, “Super Bowl”. The show surpassed Oscar, taking place in March this year that went along with the notorious scandal between Will Smith and Chris Rock.

Apart from Johnny Depp, Bad Bunny, Nicki Minaj, the MTV VMAs this year was a remarkable event for the appearance of top K-pop girl group BLACKPINK. The performance of the group was showered with praise from reputable music magazines such as “Billboard” and “Rolling Stone”.
