Most successful portraits of blind characters by Korean actresses: Choi Ji Woo rose to be an icon on with “Stairway to Heaven” 

These actresses conveyed different images of their characters immaculately. 

Moon Geun Young

Moon Geun Young once swayed the audience in “Love Me Not,” the movie adaptation of “That Winter, the Wind Blows” with her portrayal of Ryu Min, a blind heiress of a tremendous fortune but was the target of deception by the male lead to take over her asset. Later, when feelings bloomed between the two, the lovers had to face internal struggles upon learning the male lead’s real motivation. 

Thanks to the role, Moon Geun Young was able to show she was more than the “Nation’s Little Sister” title people expected of her. 

Nam Ji Hyun

“Angel Eyes” marked the return of Goo Hye Sun as a legally blind Soo Wan. For the teenage version of Soo Wan, Nam Ji Hyun graced the viewers with her performance. 

 Despite a little screen time, Nam Ji Hyun was loved for her portrayal and was said to have overshadowed Goo Hye Sun’s acting. The scenes between Nam Ji Hyun and Kang Ha Neul were memorable for both the portrayed emotions and exuding chemistry. 

Han Hyo Joo

“Always” was a movie where So Ji Sub collaborated with Han Hyo Joo. Transforming into Jeong Hwa, Han Hyo Joo conveyed a character who always kept a positive mindset despite her situation. A beautiful Han Hyo Joo besides her lovely pet never failed to move the audience. Her chemistry with So Ji Sub also received much love from the viewers, especially for their appearances and personalities. 

Song Hye Kyo

Song Hye Kyo was adored for her performances in “That Winter, The Wind Blows,” as Oh Young, a wealthy and beautiful heiress but usually became the targets of many due to her condition. There were flaws in her performance but the appearance of Song Hye Kyo helped draw much more attraction to the series. 

Song Hye Kyo was even said to have gone to a welfare center to observe and better understand the lives of the blind as well as to gain input for her acting. 

Choi Ji Woo

The female leading character with a tragic blindness that never failed to make viewers sob was Han Jung Suh in “Stairway to Heaven.” Han Jung Suh (Choi Ji Woo) went through a series of unfortunate events, from car accident, blindness to memory loss. She met again with Song Joo (Kwon Sang Woo) and they went down different routes to help Jung Suh regain her memories. 

This role actually became a highlight in Choi Ji Woo’s career along with the high status of “Stairway to Heaven” in Korean drama in general and in melodramatic works in particular.
