“Money Heist: Korea” Jeon Jong-seo’s line that gives a punch toward Japan for distorting history draws keen attention from Korean viewers

Tokyo’s line in “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1” recently made headlines.

Unlike the original Spanish film, the newly remade Netflix series “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area” is full of settings that reflect Korean sentiment. With a similar theme of thieves gathering to steal a huge amount of money, the settings of the characters and situations in “Money Heist: Korea” were completely different from the original work.

On June 24th, the Korean remake of “Money Heist” – the Netflix series “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1” was released, drawing keen attention.

In the drama, robbers with different personalities and abilities are named after cities. Among them, the character Tokyo was played by actress Jeon Jong-seo. In the original film, the anime of each role was not disclosed, but the Korean version clearly pointed out that.

In the first episode of “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1”, Denver (played by Kim Ji-hun) asked Tokyo, “Why Tokyo, of all places?”. In response, Tokyo said, “Because we’re going to do a bad thing”, catching the eyes of Korean audiences. She showed a cool smile and gaze at the screen when saying the line, creating a strange pleasure for the viewers.

In fact, Tokyo becomes part of a large-scale project to steal money in “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1” and commits an evil act of sneaking into the Mint, which produces most of the currency of the two Koreas.

It seems like Tokyo made that remark based on the historical background of Japan invading Korea to exploit grains and human resources after forcibly signing the Japan–Korea Annexation Treaty in 1910.

Upon hearing Tokyo’s answer, Denver said, “Damn. You’re smart”, praising Tokyo’s name which contains a sense of Korea’s history. 

Many Korean viewers poured out admiration for the scene. They showed their satisfaction by commenting, “In a Netflix series that can be watched by people all over the world, they gave a nice punch toward Japan for their history distortion”.

Meanwhile, according to  FlixPatrol, a global online video service ranking website, on June 25th, “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1” ranked No.3 in the worldwide chart within 24 hours of its release. The drama has emerged as a prominent and ambitious work among Netflix’s Korean series, proving its solid stories and passionate acting performances of Jeon Jong-seo, Kim Ji-hun, Yoo Ji-tae, Kim Yoon-jin, and Park Hae-soo.

Since Netflix’s Korean series, such as “Squid Game” and “All of Us Are Dead” received huge love from people around the world, attention is also being paid to whether “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Part 1” will be able to become one of the representative K-drama work.
